Just had a call from a mate I gave my chickens to saying a fox had got in and killed 2 out of 5 chickens last night, so with the close ish proximity to houses (he bought a small field at the back of his house so it's not to close) I'm thinking of waiting up with the hushpower .410 tonight? The heaviest loads I have are 19gm 6 or 24gm 7s I was thinking the 19gm 6s and keep range less than 20 yards? Only a single barrel so no chance of a Quik follow up shot! Do you think the fox will return tonight?? And is the .410 man enough at sensible ranges?

Agreed, it will be back thats for sure, but unless its 5-10 yards away and you can head shoot it, forget the .410 mate, if it left any dead hens, stake one out really close and upwind of you, that way the fox will have to stay and tug at the hen and you would get a shot, but I really would discourage a .410 for foxes, have you not got a .22 rf, even quieter, and deadly with a head shot.

i havnt yet mate FAC application posted the otherday. I have a 12 o/u but because of the location i cant use that and other than the .410 ive only got a sub 12ftlb 177 air rifle so thats a no aswell. I'll just have to see if i can get it close enough for a shot and if not just not take a shot and tell him to get a cage trap out and ill come and dispatch when he catches it.

it will come back especially if all the carcasses are left exactly as the fox left them. I know it seems wrong to leave chickens with heads of etc but if you do he will return undisturbed. worked for me many times and I always tell landowners this before it has even happened, hopefully I solve the problem before lol

why cant you use a 12g ,can you not put a back stop up and only shoot if you get a good clear shot ? , is the land past for a rimfire ? bloody foxes have been have chickens and ducks off my friends garden over the last few weeks.

Id say it has something to do with the houses close by ...

What does it matter if the land as been passed for a rimmy , if a person as an open ticket its up to them to judge wether the land is save or not ...

sorry lads, im near carnforth lancs, but I went to see the lad after posting this and it was apparently last week and its not been back since. he has now moved the chicken run around and done some better fencing. turns out he hadn't even been shuting the coop up at night! im surprised it hadn't happened sooner tbh
