It's been a while since I built a den, so I took the kids up the woods and built this, They loved it... But not as much as me, nothing like den building to bring the kid out in you!! Lol

Same here Ken, As kids you knew how to build a den by the time you were 10, A den, a fire and a fish.... Oh and you'd normally find a stash of old porn mags somewhere to hide in your den lol

Same with me as a kid, our little gang used to have its own territory, not quite trout and.rabbit, just.crisps and jam buttys, with enough haribos and fizzy drinks to kill a diabetic!!! Shame all the lads are now in jail, 3 for class A, 2 for murder, and 1 for armed robbery lol...... good old liverpool!!!

I assume it was also standard practice to booby trap your dens to protect against rivals? Our favourite was simple trip wires. We tried counterweight types and dead falls but were shite at them, probably just as well... serious stuff dens.

They were defended with catapults and peg guns mainly.. Although gat guns were the daddy of the den defence weapons lol

Great stuff Kev! :good:

Bonfire time was the best for us, making a den in the middle and extending it as people dumped doors, sofas and wood in a pile in the middle of the park on the estate from september on was ace! :D we built some crackers over the years, some were massive and had loads of different rooms. Used to hide in them to defend them like a fort because all the different estates had their own and their was a rivalry to see who could burn each others fire before bonfire night! :D Best one we made had an old coal bunker lid nailed on which would pop open like a trap door you could pop up out of to heave stones at any approaching enemies! Great fun..

My kids (aged 6 and 2) have a den in the back garden made after I trimmed back a laurel hedge and my son also loves making dinosaur nests in the local wood.

Also...I think I may have mentioned this on here before...some older kids made a den in the local wood which backs onto my son's school and they turned it into a communal den so that people could add their own bits and bobs...they even had a visitors book!

That's very civilised for dens!!

Nice mate. Me, the Mrs and nipper took 1st in a den comp down the local woods. Won a free family cinema pass. Pretty much the same build as yours, a long A frame, with sticks then greens then loads of leaf litter.. It even stood up to the water test

Best bit was when another family tried claiming ours was there already, we just added to it,. I dont think they liked the fact I showed up with rope, a saw and gloves.. Talk about competitive den building.

Yup, we used to split into two teams, usually those closest to each other and have half hour setting traps for each other and play man hunt. Those neck height wires really hurt if you were running fast.. Or slow, come to think of it.
