gonetoearth 5,144
Police arrested a man and a woman, both aged 67 and described as non-British nationals, at the house in south London on Thursday but the unnamed pair were later freed after questioning. "Two people arrested on Thursday, 21 November, in connection with an investigation into slavery and domestic servitude have been bailed until a date in January pending further enquiries," a police statement said. Police had earlier described it as one of the worst cases of its kind they had seen. "We have never seen anything of this magnitude before," said Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland, who leads Scotland Yard's Human Trafficking Unit. "These women are highly traumatised, having been held in servitude for at least 30 years with no real exposure to the outside world, and, trying to find out exactly what has happened over three decades will understandably take some time," he told reporters. Police said there was no evidence to suggest that the case involved sexual abuse. Detectives said they did not know where the youngest woman was born, adding that the relationship between the three women was "part of an ongoing investigation and we are not willing to speculate". "However, we believe that the 30-year-old woman had been in servitude all her life," a Scotland Yard statement said. The women, who are now in an unspecified location, were rescued after the Irish woman "found the courage" to call the Freedom Charity on October 18 after it was featured in a television programme about domestic slavery, police said. The charity usually deals with forced marriage and honour-based abuse but is also used to working with women who feel trapped in difficult situations. 'Scourge of modern-day slavery' . kranky 507
It's not a case of not caring about your neighbours, it's about minding your own business. London isn't like certain places where all the neighbours are in and out of each others houses and each others pockets. When people live on top of each other, they do their best keep their privacy. London is a cultural melting point, with all the problems that happen when you mix different molten liquids. I didn't pry into my neighbours business when I lived in London. As a kid you are told to keep your eyes down and your mouth shut. I know a lot of you Northerners and those of you from Scotchland and the swamp that is called Wales, have very little going on in your lives and feel the need to get busy with everyone elses business but those of us from London are all tied up with jobs and social lives and haven't the time to harass our neighbours. This is the longest recorded case of slavery in modern Britain but it might not be the actual longest. Only time will tell.

Blackbriar 8,569
The problem is not unique to London. Estimated to be 4,500 people held 'in servitude' across the UK - so there must be some ginger Irn Bru-swilling slaves ? (C'mon - there must be a joke in there somewhere ?) walshie 2,804
I live on the edge of London and I don't even know how many people live in the house attached to mine. I don't care either quite frankly. I didn't choose them as neighbours and they didn't choose me. Something fishy about the whole story I reckon. Why did it take 30 years to decide they didn't want to be there? How come slaves had access to TV, internet and phones? The people keeping them against their will obviously weren't worried about getting found out. I feel for the captives if they had a bad life, but 30 years?

We've got horseless carriages as well. We often have street parties when the queen comes out and if anyone starts humming the Lambeth Walk we all shout "COR BLIMEY, GUV'NOR!" and start dancing. It's like one big happy family with Peelers, Dips, Costermongers and Hawkers all dancing arm in arm.
