Best Ferreters

Recommended Posts

Believe me there is much snobbery in field sports beyond belief.

The stupid thing is that everybody has variation on what is in effect the same method.

I met some guys the other day who said the ferrets had come from a bloodline of this guy and that guy who mated it with this bloodline so should be good. Dropped about 6 names and i knew none of them and didn’t care. My best ever ferret came from a rescue centre that was a pet and never been down a hole in 3 years. One season later he was the fastest worker and brilliant.

Treat your ferrets well and just enjoy.

There is a lot of truth in saying that there are many ways of doing the same task well. . .

But you do see some folk who are just sloppy. . . . i'm a bit autistic, but it annoys me sometimes when folk don't set a net or fold one up, or similer. . . the same way as me, as I see it as the most efficient.

But that's because i'm sad.

I lay them over the crap so that i dont make as much noise where I'm working,I rely on the dog holding it in the net. ..unlike Tomo who you can usually hear crashing through the cover and overturning everything in his way..But he likes digging more than me. ;)

:hmm:Personaly,...I think it takes a while, to get really slick, proficient and become natural,.. at the ferreting/netting game. Hunting rabbits throughout the UK,..working over different geographical terrains/areas,.seems to hone your skills...and sharpen you up.

I've been out with scores of lads, and I generally know, within minutes, if we are going to be able to work efficiently together. Some folk just don't take to the prickly old game,.and same as with impatient, skittish,.excitable jukels,....it will never be for them...

Ferreting ain't rocket science,..but, as a minor field sport, you have to abide by certain rules,..and if you don't,.. and instead, choose to act the noisy fool,..it will get, emotional..

50 years on,...I still love it...

I once met a bloke at a game fair who was very elderly and had ferreted all his life. A bloke came and asked him if he had any books on ferreting,He said its not rocket science you put a ferret down a hole then put your net over. has not changed in the fifty odd years I have done it.

Did make me smile how can you be the best at it?

exactly you are the best at it when you are out in the field enjoying yourself.

But I have worked out who's the best, my son when he was three last year working a warren with his 70 year old granddad. The best ferreters I have ever seen
