skycat 6,174
I wonder if it was an Aesculapian snake: they are known to hiss loudly when threatened. Grow up to 2 metres in length. I only ever saw one when I lived in France, and it looked huge! I just read up on the Montpellier snake: I'd never heard of that one before despite having lived only a couple hundred miles from the town of the same name Those are wow photos Paulus.
bobcullen79 1,495
I was over my brothers place in spain last year and his little terrier grabbed a toad , the dog was dead 15 min later ... turned out to be a cane toad,by all accounts big dogs can get over it but his little terrier died on the way to the vets . Apparently there quite common over there where he lives in javea. . Needless to say they have a daily walkround on the lookout for them . I was in Javea, a year or two ago, some stunning wildlife. Some crazy big bugs too. Caught all sorts of lizards and bugs for the kids to take a look at..
baw 4,360
Lived in a rural county all my life in the U.K. that is and yet to see a snake.here you go one from the other week You've took that rule of thirds to the extreme paulus, your meant to fit the whole snake in I've seen loads of grass snakes, usually when I'm looking under boulders for worms to fish lol. Can mind seeing a nest of the wee b*****ds moving along the dead fern at the top of a drainage ditch next to the road. Must have been a dozen, could only get fleeting glances and the odd one falling. I ain't scared of snakes but that sent a shiver down my spine. Got one there thinking back lol. Something about 1 or 2 of any species being ok but a lot of something gives you the heebyjeebies lol. Seen a few adders mostly early in the morning. There is a place that's good for a walk with the dogs has a beware of adders sign on the path, yet to see one there here you go Astral have you ever seen one vibrate in water this was some sort of defense mechanism as it had scented me at that point Aye paulus, you picked the best pic from a bad bunch
whippet 99 2,613
I nearly lost a lurcher to snake bite,.........come home from walk that night ,......noticed the dog was off its food ,........thought oh well next morning got up and her head was twice the size and motionless ..................£700 later and she was on the mend ...........they couldn't work out why the treatment they used wasn't touching her ,.......so after steroids for snake bite they could see an improvement and as the swelling started going down you could see puncture under her eye .........she has been worth every penny by any ones standards

Ratreeper 441
I see a lot of lizards and quite a few grass snakes but I have never seen an adder. If I do take my dog on holiday I will do so on the assumption he isn't coming home, the daft bugger as no instinct for self preservation at all. He is a staffy and if he dies of old age I will be amazed

Luckily it was either just a skin or had died when they burnt the heather, wee heart stopper though lol.

I saw a grass snaked basking about a week ago and it was so placid I thought it would be a good way to teach my dog to leave snakes alone. He left it at the time so fingers crossed, but I know damn well if he comes across one when I am not near he will go for it He isn't daft but when something moves he just goes for it without a thought and has the scars to prove it. How serious is an adder bite to a dog? I have only known of one jack russel that was bitten, it was sick for a while but was ok so I have never really worried about them. I think it depends on a lot of things mate, how healthy the dog is, age, size etc. I was always told they could kill a small child but I doubt it. Unless your dog sat on it, its only going to bite it as a warning. Still worth avoiding though lol.

04fox8 168
Yesterday I was in the mountains with Trev he was having a good old mooch about scenting here and there very aware of every sound Basically acting how you would expect a hunting breed to act. Daft cnut decided to piss a snake off Luckily I was watching him and when I saw him focused on a particular bush I moved towards him thinking it could be a rabbit or mountain hare no the fuuckin bush starts hissing like a cobra with Trevs ears pricked up, eyes focused on target it was a matter of time before he tried his luck I dived for him mannaged to grab his collar just as he was about to stike (yes I know full well the snake would of hit first). This was a very beautiful snake maybe 1.5 meters long, brilliant green and about as fat as redbull can maybe a little fatter unfortunately it did one before the mrs could take a photo but boy did this thing have attitude Anyway I researched what this snake could be and from google and talking with my friends here it seems this snake was a "Montpellier snake" not amazingly venemous but aparently a very painful bite which "rarely" can kill dogs/cats/children etc. Point is this; if any of you travel with your dogs be aware of local fauna and always keep a sharp eye when out and about No Kids yourself then?
