Bosun11 537
For the easiest option, I'd go with John's (bull terriers) post. Strim down, then cut, you may not think your cuttting any grass but you will be. After that get yourself some feed & weed and apply as per instructions. Cut as much as poss after and tidy up edges and pathways, if you have 'em, as this really does make a shite lawn look better. If you have bald spots after a few weeks, where heavy weeds have been, just patch repair. The bottom line with laws is cutting, once your doing this weekly it will really make a difference. Now, you can lay new if you want but for cost and effort in getting the thing going, which is difficult, especially at this time of year (better spring or autumn), you are far better and will get more satisfaction from getting an old lawn back on track. Best foot forward...

The less spent the better, but as you can see it needs a tiny tidy up.
walshie 2,804
Really knuckled down on this over the last few days. It is now ankle height all over. Lawn consists of grass (some), brambles (lots) and geraniums (millions.) Do you reckon glyphosate the whole lot and re-sow the grass when everythings dead, or press on with the mowing daily idea? budharley 945
hi mate strim and rake it off then do it again and again until you get it right down and dig out any brambles , find out if you have any borders if so put an edge on your lawn where it meets the borders now mow your grass on the highest setting on your mower go over it then lower it until its right down to feck all now go to your borders turn them over take out any big weeds then spray off your borders . leave your lawn for two weeks then see what growth you have got then take it from there spray your borders weekly you can turn that around without spending a penny
cookiemonsterandmerlin 145
I would flail mow it get one in from hire shop alot better than strimming it wacks the shit out every thing . rake even edited off the worst spray with grazon 90 rather than roundup but if you do go roundup try your local countrywide I think you have SCATS and ask for GLYFOS alot cheaper than any retail weedkiller 5litres is normally £32 20 mls per 5 litres kills most things stone dead even big brambles If you want the grazon PM me as it not really available to joe public Cookie Edited July 8, 2013 by cookiemonsterandmerlin
