bigdaz 688
Why does it smell different when you flatulate in the bath.. ..serious question by the way.. Why does it smell different when you flatulate in the bath.. ..serious question by the way.. Don't know but when you fart that seems to smell worse as well.

bigdaz 688
Speaking for myself that is, incidentally, I can't spell flatulate and I sure as hell don't know what it means.
Rake aboot 4,936
Concentration dear boy No air to dilute the methane . That coupled with the fact that when you fart in the bath, you automatically lean forward to get your nose above the bubbles point of pop.

jack2o 45
From google: it has been well documented (Mapes & Bennett, 2000) that fart-stink concentration increases exponentially as a function of the density of material it travels through. Hence, water being more dense than air, fart-stink concentrations are greatly enhanced when the air-water density interface is breached. Greater fart-stink concentrations are why underwater farts smell worse did you quote that from sandymere lol
Born Hunter 17,960
There's no special reactions or anything it's simply down to entropy and the dispersion of one gas in another. Simply put, when you fart in the bath the effective distance over which the 'fart' will desperse is significantly reduced, making it more concentrated and smell stronger. I imagine other factors like clothing causing a more gradual 'release' will have the effect of reducing concentration as well as other environmental factors. Fart science........................ walshie 2,804
Try catching the bubbles in (the wife's) flannel and making a small balloon out of it. Then by applying pressure, you can release the fart smell into 1000's of tiny pungent bubbles. So I'm told.

Oh god, you had to bring the laws of thermodynamics into it! Which law is most relavant when discussing farts in the bath? Just had a quick brush up, I'd say the second one is relevant until the fart bubble breaches the water anyway!

walshie 2,804
cant smell any worse than doing it in bed & then have someone hold your head under the covers You poor innocent thing. Is THAT why you think we do it?
Born Hunter 17,960
As it happens Malt, I've just been pondering on the subject further................ If we assume a fart is roughly equally dispersive in three dimensional space (like a growing balloon) and human smell is proportional to chemical concentration then the strength of smell should follow the inverse square law.......... basically if you double the distance the strength is quartered. So assuming farting in the bath reduces the distance of necessary dispersion by half it increases the strength by a factor of four! Hence such a significant and noticeable effect. This is the beginning of a peer reviewed paper I feel!
