Lost Nets

Having not had the ferrets for a good few years im struggling to get a good routine of counting out and back in the nets,ive lost a lot of nets the last couple of seasons,Not only have i had some of these for years but also dont like leaving them about.Just wondering what you do to keep it to a minimal?

i always walk round the set once all the nets are collected in i do this 2 or 3 times to make sure i havent left any behind plus iv started using bright coloured nets now this helps alot atb

Bright coloured nets and count them out and count them in , when we stop at lunch time count them again and if you have lost one you know roughly what area to look in

Good idea that paulus might give that ago.

Simonrocco both of those help but when your crawling into hedges you cannot always see them.

plus ferreting alone im always in a hurry to get to the next set.

I have never set over 50 nets so I can't comment on that, the most I have set is around the 40 mark. With my hand on my heart I can honestly say I have not lost a net in the last 20 odd years, in fact I cannot remember even losing a net, but, I may well have in the past.

 

The method I use is elastic bands, but instead of putting them on my wrist they go in a pocket, never count them out or in, if there are bands left in the pocket there are still nets down simple as. However, that is fine when working on your own, it is when there is more than one laying nets from the same bag that the problems arise. Not every one is as conscientious as they should be, especially if the nets are not theirs.

My hat is off to you tiercel,, I loose a handful most seasons,,, but I usually blame who ever is with me lol,,,,but vin is bad .

 

Can't be doing with that lacy band business ,,,, mind I proberbly would have more nets now,,if I had

Just know how many you have and count them after a big set and at the end of day.

I am moving over to bright nets next season to help. At least with hemp nets they rot down after a while its not too bad but leaving nylon ones is like littering the place I hate it when it happens.

Oh well that's something you should put them on eBay , ferret net bands £5 for fifty : )
