johnny boy68 11,726
The hare is a mystical creature though, it deserves respect. If your just wanting to kill hares, fair dos, do what you want. But there is nothing like watching a hare trying to out class your dog, nothing comes close. I've lumped them, kicked them up, you name it but you learn in this game, something's are just taking liberties. Let the hare run, give it some chance otherwise, what's the point? For the pot maybe, just doesn't sit right with me. Its not a mythical creature its a big rabbit lol, all animals that are hunted deserve respect but not in the way some hold the hare, I hunt my dogs loose and won't lead them up because there maybe hares around. Plenty of coursing lads get there pups and young dogs going mullering summer bunnies on the lamp but thats ok because its only a rabbit. 2 Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
The hare is treated like this mythical creature by some and if don't do it properly your not showing the hare the respect its due, watching a good course especially one with law given is a sight to behold. The initial part watching the dog make up the ground to get the first turn in is something I love watching, unfortunately I've never really owned a "hare dog" so most hares I've ever caught have been hunted up and I can count how many I've taken out of the seat on one hand. If you give the hare law its coursing but if you don't its hunted up, 2 different types of hunting. Each to their own. Whats that supposed to mean? Are you saying only hares should only be taken if given law? by a sportingdaytime courser yes, different if say you are pest controlling a farm and are asked to get shot of hares, then common sence would say shooting the best way forward as using a day dog would not be viable for massive numbers, some might if they choose lamp numbers of hares and enjoy it, thats their buisness and not mine, 1 Quote Link to post
baw 4,360
Would you shoot a hare Johnny? I wouldn't, haven't, never will. I suppose its down to what you hunt and regard as your quarry. The hare to me is like catching a salmon, the rabbit.... A trout. 2 Quote Link to post

desertbred 5,490
the longer the slip the better , depends on the location as a lot of lads discard the long eared one anyway the course is more important to the courser if you are out for sport long slips the dog does the work and makes the ground. if you are pest control or want to fill th freezer then the gun is the tool but dont advocate shooting them like my running Edited January 30, 2013 by desertbred Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
Yea mate, it was just the real dogmen tag that irked me lol. I totally understand what your saying and I too like to respect the quarry. I wouldn't take a hare from its form if the dogs on the lead etc. but 100 yard slips just ain't practical. If a hares in a tight field 20 yards away and running, cover is yards away, I pretty much think in that situation 20 yards is fair law. You wait any longer and it's gone. Yes you could chose not to run it but f**k that, we can't be choosy in this game I'm afraid. I always ok most of the time lol let the hare get its stride before the dogs slipped and to be honest, most hares are more in the 200 yards away bracket than the 20 right on the button baw fair law distance depends entirely on what ground your running .. mind you seen some slip when their on end of welly . paulsmithy83 567
Thought that b obvious some lads over complicate things not like u get ur range finder out to clock the yards just use ur sweed Quote Link to post
ABLE 3
There has only been snow onthe ground for a week down the fens. Why would the hare need Time To recover even with snow on the ground theres still plenty to eat .sugar beet rape leaf.ect .answer to the above 30 yards 300 yards the dog gets slipped. Just like everybody else .dont listen to the bullshit on here. They all slip. Quote Link to post
