Could be either mate when breeding your looking for what your dog doesnt have or lacks in and choose a dog/bitch that has the qualities your dog might lack in. Ie stamina, coat, feet etc

There is definatly a difference in first crosses when you breed them one way round or the other. I've never ran a first x so carnt coment witch is best, I've spoke to lads who have. Most prefere the g

"Dam & Sire, which is more important" ? Bit of a daft question, in my opinion. Would you use a shit sire..... or a shit dam ? Of course not; you would try to use the best sire and dam available !! I don't believe this "80/20" theory in dogs. I suspect the pups get 50% of there genes from each parent, but of course their looks and physical attributes can throw to either parent, but they will still carry the same genes wether one pup throws to, say, the collie side, and another throws to the greyhound side.

Cheers.

afraid thats not how genetics work, if genes were passed 50/50, any hereditary health problem present in a line would effect every pup in every litter, this isn't so.

it would be impossible to do this with 50/50 genes. genetics are random in their distribution, one pup can carry 90%(or any other percentage) of the dams genes while another can carry 90%(or any other percentage)of the sires genes

Well; Geneomics is way above my pay grade, and if you are right, and my 50/50 split is wrong; then I must be right in saying the 80/20 split is also wrong, (I'm sure Pareto's Law doesn't apply to geneomics) ?

yes your right. there's no rhyme or reason to it, the genes go where they go.

when breeding 1st cross, you usually put your herding/bull etc over the greyhound.

i've heard various reasons for this, i.e they'll be taller (? lol), easier for bitch to carry and for birth.

but when breeding 2nd,3rd,4th etc crosses, is it the same story/weird theories, when selecting a dog to serve or be served. if you have a specific type or trait that your trying to get.

reason people say put the non runner over the grey , is because 9/10 times the grey will be free ...

imo most 1st crosses will level out at a similar size no matter which way round there bred ..

when breeding any further generations or breeding lurcher x lurcher i think you should be looking at a similar type sire and dam and similar sizes to lessan the chance of litter wastage .. or always go bigger with the sire well thats what id do any way but what do i know

An old saying, a kennel is only as strong as its bitches..

Thats true but you would still look for the best dog you could get to mate to them,

Its not always the best dog that produces the goods, its often the dog that best suits the bitch.
