bird 10,014
Can anyone tell me what a good age is to get a puppy. iv seen a puppy I want and it he's 15 weeks old. its ok at that age, might just have to bond bit more with it, as it prob got used to its 1st owner, or other dogs there.Got my pup at just over 7 weeks old when i had him, he is 14 weeks old this week, not done much training with really, just let him be a pup, he got good brain on him , plenty of time yet 1 Quote Link to post

moocher123 132
cause i have had one and spent alot of time with it and the bond you get with a pup at 8 weeks there all you know at 15 weeks they have grown to bond to other people it is just my own personal thought like i said its just me as the expearence i had i had the pup well train but there were certin things i could see that i had never had with a 8week old pup like when you call them some times they just to be a bit reluctant to come like when you had the pup from 8 weeks i wouldnt by a dog over the age of 10 weeks max but that imo cheers Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
Well I got my Hancock one at 5 months. He`s 19 months now, works well and is devoted to me. Quote Link to post
littlefish 588
It is always interesting to hear people's opinions on this. I had a pup at 6 weeks and 2 from 10 weeks - I can't say I noticed much difference in how they were to train or respond or bond but I probably wouldn't have another one at 6 weeks - i felt it was a bit young. moocher123 132
i would take a ten week old at the oldest but wouldnt touch a 15 WEEK OLD PUP IMO Quote Link to post
Bull-Whippet 4
In my experience it can make life a little easier to take them nice & young... just as moocher said they seem to build a stronger bond with you, but thats just my opinion ive even took pups as young as 4-5weeks & bottle fed them puppy milk lol... but never again! providing you put lots of time & effort in you wont be none the wiser. But it is a decision that can only be made by the owner. ATB mate... Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
i would take a ten week old at the oldest but wouldnt touch a 15 WEEK OLD PUP IMO If the pup had been intensely socialised it might not matter if you took it at 15 weeks old, but by 'intensely socialised' I would be wanting that pup to have travelled regularly in a vehicle, and been out and about to take in new sights and sounds, met different people and dogs: how many breeders would go to all that trouble? Not many. Many people who breed lurchers don't even let them out of the yard or run, and don't understand how important it is to use that 'early learning' window to accustom the pup to the outside world before that 'learning window' closes, forever in the case of pups of delicate temperament. 2 Quote Link to post
Snifferboy 659
I have had 2 dogs at around 7 weeks old and 1 at 13 or 14 weeks old, though different breeds in all of there make up, I have found the younger dogs just "fit in" a lot easier and the older one was a lot harder work though she is 3/8 collie which may also have something to do it... But time and effort is all it takes in nearly all circumstances and every dog is different. 1 Quote Link to post
