steve66 3,647
Had afew dogs that would happily take feather , but afew times lately my whips refused never had this before so im quiet peeved Anyone had experience of this before ? Also thinking about getting a collie x for next year for pot filling ( not botherd about stuff you cant eat ) just wonderd what the best xs are for taking feather as i want to cut the risk factor down of refusing Quote Link to post
gamerooster 1,179
The best x I have seen hand's down for taking feather, has to be a first cross bedlington greyhound, good nose and not afraid to work in cover............ IMHO, for a general pot-filler/ mooching lurcher, you can't beat this cross 2 Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
My bull lurcher will carry anything. Gundog men say that dogs dont like retrieving pigeon but my dogs first catch was an injured feral ! When i was younger i used to take my old lurcher around some fields with rabbit fencing around it. The pheasants and partridge just used to run into the fencing and are easily picked up by a dog. Just get them out with an air gun and let them retrieve a flapping duck or pheasant. I was merely pointing out that if you want to get a dog taking feather these dumb birds are easy to start them off on. Just like theres nothing special about letting a pup catch a mixy rabbit. There confidence boosters. Quote Link to post

fitchet 788
No mate youve read it wrong. I dont WANT a dog to kill birds. But i was telling the topic starter HOW to get his dog some easy catches. 1 Quote Link to post

gamerooster 1,179
I hear that putting them in partridge pens is the best way to start them off, not much room for them to run around, plus they can't fly out, really good sport I think Quote Link to post
