Lawerencetown Show, Cancelled

Recommended Posts

Sad sad day for our sport, Dessie I know where you are coming from,, I was looking forward to your show as it would have been my last this year, real pity.

Here is how I see it, do we kill the golden goose because it has a bad leg, or do we keep the goose and remove the leg, its a no brainer to me. Its for this very reason I dont show or race dogs, and its the lads and lass'es who do love this sort who will suffer. And just to address kevin's comments regarding the running of ur show next year, it will be a real shame if this was to happen, I know ur concerns and you sounded dejected when talking to you about the show on sunday, but its shows like yours that keep the game alive and kicking.

its looking like people running shows will soon have no other choice than to stop holding racing as it is the one area that causes the most conflict and i totally agree with albert too many people get abuse for running a show by people that dont use their own name i for one will be having a long think about holding our show next year its just not worth the hassle

Kevin is right, I've had numerous conversations in recent times with other show organisers where the subject of doing away with racing altogether has come up.Anyone who's ever organised a show big or small knows that there's months of unpaid work goes into it and it's totally unfair to have nameless people coming on here an berating every show over racing.

Shows are supposed to be a bit of craic for competitors and spectators alike and raise much needed funds for many a worthy cause, they are also the public face of what fieldsports and the people who partake in them are about. With the amount of clowns in the game at the minute it seems to me like someone has hit the fieldsports self destruct button and forgot to tell the rest of us about it.

I've attended a few shows this year and i've got to be honest as a whole i thought they were very friendly, relaxed and felt welcomed by every person i met and spoke with. Just because there a few issues with the racing it's absolutely crazy to suggest to do away with the racing at the shows. There are as many debates/discussions with the showing as there is with the racing so to even hint at to do away with the racing is madness. As a whole the shows are great, it's the mindless idiots who come on to the forums abusing, slandering and even threatening other members which is damaging and destroying the reputation of our sport, hobbies and shows. Let's put our heads together to come up with ideas to improve the shows and drive them forward and not to destroy what many people have built up over the many years the shows have been going on for. I'm willing to put the first £100 into a kitty which can be used to DNA test any questionable dogs providing the DNA test can prove conclusively the parentage of any dog.

Darren,

A sensible suggestion - you can get a DNA test done for c £50. How's this for an idea to stop this nonsense over racing - I will up the cost of an objection on a dog's breeding to £50 to cover the cost of a test. If the test shows that the dog is pure greyhound then the objector gets the £50 back plus £25 from me. If the dog is shown to have other bloodlines then the owner gets the £25 and the satisfaction of knowing they have been vindicated.

All dogs, when registered with the ICC for stud duties, are required to give a hair sample for DNA purposes, as is a brood bitch when she has her first litter of pups presented for earmarking at 8-10 weeks.

I really don`t know how taking a sample from a `suspect` dog will determine if he is full greyhound or not ?

To determine parentage, you would need both parents to be DNA. There is nothing to stop breeding two greyhounds together, as they are not registered in the DNA system, calling them Lurchers and there is no way of proving if they are 100% Greyhounds, or in the majority of cases 95% Greyhound X`s by getting DNA done.

I have just spoken to Tom Buckley at the National Equine Centre in Kildare, where our stud dogs are registered and he put me on to the DNA Department at Wetherbys and they told me that they can`t determine what breed of dog is from a DNA sample, all they can determine is parentage, for which they need both parents. So all this `talk` about DNA is a load of rubbish, unless everybody concerned with a certain dog is happy to bring the dog and both parents for testing ! Can just see that happening !!

Sorry to disagree with your quote of what Wetherbys told you but while ideally one would have to have both parents and dog's DNA - there are other tests which could be relevant. Plus I cannot see anyone with a pure bred greyhound taking a chance in a test which could prove they were deliberately cheating.

Isn't it an interesting commentary on contributors to this forum that a show is cancelled and it attracts several thousand visits and a lot insults being thrown whereas when I put up the good news of one of the best prize structures for any show in Ireland it gets views in the 10s rather than thousands. BAD NEWS CERTAINLY TRAVELS FASTER & FURTHER ON THIS FORUM THAN GOOD NEWS!

great idea albert a very generous offer but id change one bit of it,the person who owns the dog in question gives you fifty pound and if its a greyhound they lose it to charity.

Just say a dogs DNA comes back showing it is 98.5% greyhound and 1.5% deerhound............is it still a 'lurcher'? And if so, would other competitors be happy to line their dog up on the starting line beside it without crying either at the time or afterwards?

I'm sorry i can't answer that question as i don't know all the ins and outs of DNA testing. I would prefer a DNA test done that would determine whether the parentage of the dogs is genuine. Also i agree with Martin that it is then open for someone to use two unmarked greyhounds as lurchers and produce pups but surely the same test would also determine whether the dog is pure bred or not.

Thanks to those who have pm'd me to donate money into the kitty should the testing go ahead.

I also hope that Dessie would consider changing his mind and going a head with the show as the vast majority of those who attend and support the shows have the sports best interests at heart.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
      Margaret Mc Stay
