storm323 191
Try not to make it an issue you can over do it that way give her a break from it and when you do it again make sure she's enjoying it . Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,102
I had a problem with mine retreiving, and was fortunate enough Skycat put me onto tug training, something I cant thank skycat enough for, contact skycat on here mate it works I am waiting till the season starts proper,to judge it properly but mine did two retreives last wk,no probs,The training itself will go against everything you have ever been taught about training,But it works very well mine was very possesive,if you have no look contacting skycat pm me and I will see if I can forward the stuff she sent me, good luck Darren Quote Link to post
Casso 1,261
toys and tug items should be just a artificial form of a limb or a jumper a finger a hand, its a item that facilitates contact with you, without losing the use of a limb or drawing blood its the contact with you that's the clincher, the more a dogs confidence and trust of us grows the more energy the dog can gives us, that is the more play he will enter into too and at the same time the more control we have over the dog its the interaction with you that builds the group mind between the two of you and training becomes easy after that, i would have whatever interaction you can that get the pup smiling and its tail wagging, best of luck bud, tug play is all about letting the dog win every time and having it come into your space to play again, if your not letting the mutt win to play again your not playing it to your advantage Edited July 19, 2012 by Casso 1 Quote Link to post
neil_fret 6
Thanks for all your replies it's my first lurcher you see and all a big help I've also just got a copy of purdys progress thanks to mr pit, I wish I had that from the start lol, is there any other tips or info you could giv to a beginner I would be very grateful Thanks again Neil Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
The only problem with Purdey's Progress is that Purdey did literally everything almost perfectly right from the start. Dave Sleight told me this himself: the dog just wanted to do whatever he wanted it to do; he said it was the easiest dog he'd ever trained. Which is great if you want to see how easy training can be, but it doesn't actually tell you what to do if the pup doesn't play your game! Quote Link to post
bunnys 1,228
IT is also a fact that there are some individuals that no matter how much you harness the bonding and training tequniques theyjust wont play the game so to speak . While there are others that are just out and out naturals , those types that will nevs be top retrievers usually are the types that will make up the deficit in other departments . atb bunnys. birddog 1,354
unfortunately we learn more from our mistakes and difficult dogs, just be cool, consistent and patient, take your time you and the pup will have many years together Quote Link to post
john john 51
Thanks for all your replies it's my first lurcher you see and all a big help I've also just got a copy of purdys progress thanks to mr pit, I wish I had that from the start lol, is there any other tips or info you could giv to a beginner I would be very grateful Thanks again Neil get the dog out working and chasing ,a few rabbits mate chase a few squirrels and just let it enjoy itself .throw all those stupid toys in the nearest bin mate and dont play tug of war with your dog ,after all you dont want to be playing tug of war with it with a rabbit do you ,as for purdeys progress that bullshit should go with the toys ,but be on the safe side .tear a few pages out and keep in your pocket ,just in case your caught short whilst your out .
