mally 832
I've a lab bitch here (kc registered but working pedigree) she's 6 years old now. Fantastic stamina and quick too. She's as quick on the last retrieve of the day as she was on her first. If you use a working Lab i'm sure you won't go far wrong, just stay clear of the fat good for nothing show lines 1 Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
Smart animal is that Trigger...i can't for the life of me think why there ain't so many about?..either that or i just don't know the right folk? ATB Andy. I carnt understand why gundog breed lurchers arnt more popular maybe years ago it was more likely their was a big divide in lads who kept lurchers and those that kept and used gundogs and a lot of lads who kept lurchers [poachers] would have never seen or used the potential a gundog could give in produceing a decent lurcher.I am only speaking of the area i grew up in. 2 Quote Link to post
dodger 3,455
I was just looking for a bit of info on the use of Labrador blood in a lurcher..i have seen one 1st cross although this was 35 years ago lol,he was a cracking dog or atleast to us young lads back then he was, real fast with plenty of drive and very biddable too,if i'm correct i think Dodger's dog Topper has Labrador in his make-up somewhere along the lines too? I've seen him at graft and he was a very good dog, very obedient, worked fantastic, stamina aplenty...infact of the few i have known or heard of i haven't heard a single bad word for them?...why do you think they ain't as popular as perhaps they should be?..good coats, very obedient, natural retrievers, strong in bone, stamina, good nose? ...plenty in their favour imo? ATB Andy. Alright andy mate the line started from a lab gettin into a lads garden, his dad had racing greyhounds n the lab managed to climb the 10 ft fence to get to the bitch, the lab was just left to roam the streets as most dogs did at that time but the lab was a nice light racy type not like the fat feckers that you see alot of today, the greyhound was a big strong distance bitch, his dad was pissed off to say the least but his son talked him into letting him look after the bitch n rear the pups, she had 3 pups, 2 went to pet homes n he kept a nice red bitch pup that turned out 25 inch n very racy but strong and durable, cut a long story short she turned out a cracker n took all quarry and loads of it, he later lined this bitch to a 3 1/4 greyhound 1/4 saluki n this litter was even better from this litter he kept a dog and a bitch again both turned out crackers doing all quarry, he later lined the bitch usein kippers old dog tramp, he kept a bitch from this litter whitch again turned out a very good alround bitch n she was grafted to the max, he later lined her to cruiser and that litter produced good daytime dogs, i used a dog from this litter over my late saluki whippet greyhound bitch which prodced topper n he has been a very good dog for me n took all iv thrown at him he's 8 n a half now n was still workin the end of last seasn.. I reckon you would love one from the right type andy, at least it would get tested with you lol atb 1 Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Smart animal is that Trigger...i can't for the life of me think why there ain't so many about?..either that or i just don't know the right folk? ATB Andy. I think its the fact they dont look "the biz" Andy, leading a usefull looking mutt like that around the shows wouldn't attract as many glances as a bucket headed 90lb monster......... One would fit right in here then Simmo as both myself and my mutts are right ugly feckers .ATB Andy. No good to me Andy, they say dogs mirror there owners so i need a strapping beast of an animal  Quote Link to post

beast 1,884
when i lived in norfolk i knew a couple of old boys who used to a bit of shooting on the mud flats as well as a spot of rabbiting and they both swore by labxgrey or even better they said flatcoatxgrey as they were a bit taller and slimmer and the cross threw a better coat. this would have been just after the war until the mid sixties and they said that both these crosses were popular at the time, both along the north norfolk coast and on the broads as all-round hunting/shooting dogs. FUJI 17,623
I think i mis-read Mally's post Max lol..he was just saying he had a good Lab bitch himself of 6 years old..sorry my mistake but would still be a top mating haha Quote Link to post

redcharge 379
If a well bred pup came up, a lab x would be something I'd be interested in I think the right ones could be very useful Quote Link to post
border lad 1,047
Just to give you a bit more insight of that dog I had, I was in Asphalt Paving, my work, took me from the Shetland Islands, to Saltash in cornwall, and I took my dog, or dogs with me, and I can assure you, he took Hares were ever I ran him, Now there is only a few dogs that can really master the Hare, daylight single Handed, that dog had speed to burn, he pressurised his quarry so much, he was straight up to the Hare, and then he changed gear, and worked the Hare from His Shoulders, flat out, the Hare did not have chance to turn tight it was over, and he could turn on a sixpence, and carry back to hand, ((((( He did not kill a Hare every time he ran, but if he hunted it up, he took them regular,, as I have said,my latest dog is a Saluki/grey/whippet, 2 year old, and he is not in the same field as that dog, ((( but in Honesty the other dog got as much running as he could take, there was plenty of game about in the seventies, and sitting out in the middle of the field, it was a paradise for a dog that could hunt of the road, A couple of quick runs, it was so easy,,, and I made a Huge Mistake,, I never took a Pup from Him from another good bitch I had called Tinker, (((( the demands of my work, and trying to make money, (((( were as in Hind site I already had a Gold mine in those two dogs that I mentioned, and dont forget, the breeding of that dog in those days, was two coursing champion greyhounds, and a top working black Lab, that the game Keeper worked and owned,, (((( Never forget a Proper coursing greyhound, in my opinion was some annimal, TO watch Salukis course on the fens, for me is like watching wet paint dry, 4 to 5 minute runs is not for me, and truth they would be useless to me were I live, Quote Link to post
