Guest bezza
So after an avalanche of documentaries on the theme of gypsies/travellers, what have we learned? They are generally illiterate and choose to live in caravans which the women clean obsessively. Gypsy women have a retarded view of the world, in particular, they are obsessed with ridiculous wedding dresses. They are dominated by their menfolk both physically and psychologically. and are taken out of school early so that their horizons are well and truly diminished. The men make a lot of threats towards other male caravan dwellers and occasionally actually fight, sometimes for money. The fights are usually dull affairs. Male children are made to fight each other from an early age. This is child abuse. The fathers seem to want to live out their macho fantasies through their sons. ( Sorry Tyson Fury). Channel four have made a fortune out of encouraging this myth of gypsy 'culture'. I can't see what's valuable about the way they live. If they choose to live such a regressive lifestyle, let them---but their way of life shouldn't be glamourised. It just encourages them to be more ingrained in their backwardness. Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
Yet to see one on the programme that i would fear on a one on one fight All a load bullies that fight between themselves . The biggest threat to there way of life is themselves not us or the government. ATB Cookie
Guest bezza
I haven't got anything against them. People are people, some good some bad. I just find it irritating that their way of life is held up as some sort of romantic ideal. The kids should at least be made to attend school right up to age sixteen. Then at least they will be literate and able to make some choices. At the moment they are held back by family control so that their ignorance of the modern world is perpetuated. Gypsy/traveller women are in the same situation as muslim women ---totally dominated. The kids also have a raw deal in my opinion.

Carraghs Gem 1,699
muslim and gypsys are same, only difference is the way the women dress
shepp 2,285
In many ways I pity them. To be so ignorant that you are unable to appreciate simple things in life, all I see when I watch them is greed and envy. Always worrying about how much the next person has and spending large amounts to make themselves look wealthier to each other. As highlighted with the weddings, they just don't realise that just by throwing large amounts of cash at something, you do not make it look beautiful, in fact at a point it turns in another direction and becomes more and more ugly. The only chance they have of rising from there pit is to try and encourage there children to become educated. I have to say as a plus point they do try and give there children a work ethic. Hard to disagree with any of that......why we are watching them on tv is beyond me......who cares......id rather look at the way some of these African tribes live at least its vaguely interesting !

asanley 1,009
I,v learnt that pseudo intellectuals will defend any way of life , however odious it is , as long as the word culture prefixes it .
Guest cookiemonsterandmerlin
I have learnt naff all i already knew that most were thiefs and tax dogers. If they wanted to maintain there cultural way of life. They would still be in horse drawn caravans not 20k vans pulled by Range river sport. ATB Cookie
Kay 3,709
I think by todays standards women appear to be kept on a leash & clean & cook all day , but thats no different to how i was raised , my mother made house & my father worked & brought in the money , I know my nan made house & my mom being the only girl was expected to help her mother & helped raise younger brothers in the family , again not specific to gippo's As for any domestic violence issues, thats not limited to gippo's it happens regardless
