Marvin 193
Before any one says its time the season ended, a) the bloke wanted his hedge ferreting, I don't care as it could possibly lead to a little more permission right on my very doorstep. Anyhoo, went out to do rid a blokes hedge of rabbits (or start too), nice day so thought best not take a thick coat as I didn't fancy sweating like Bin Laden under the bed whilst walking from mine to this bit of land (first mistake), young nephew couldn't play out with his favourite uncle and Marv because his mam thinks he is too young, Kids 8 and in 12/13yr old clothes, built like a bull, but hey mams rule. Called at the farmhouse to let him know I was there and not just some reprobate, the bloke was made up with the fact there was someone wanting to ferret on his land rather than just shoot, exchanged a bit of banter and set about the job in hand. Now there were only 3 sets on his driveway so to speak of not too big averaging around 6 or 7 holer's, all under Blackthorn bushes, so needed to be crawling around, it wasn't long before I realised I had made my second mistake, no cap on, them thorns hurt like hell stuck inside ye nut don't they? OUCH, that along with the fact i didn't have a coat with me made things a tad prickley crawling around I can tell you, First set all netted up stinker in and wasnt too long before one hit the net, nice fat one at that too, waited a while but nothing else was showing from this set so moved on to the next one. Second set similar to the first but a few more nettles, mistake number 3, make sure shirts tucked in properly as those nettles are not to friendly on a fat gut , waited for a while and the inevitable happened two rabbits from a hole I had missed in the thick, well I say missed but after mistakes 1+2 I thought better of getting in there. Marv was going mental to get off his lead to chase them, but as there were horses in the field I thought best keep him tethered even though he didn't even acknowledge their presence. Third and final set of the morning was a tad easier to get to and soon had it netted and stinker in, almost straight away a rabbit hit one of the nets and I was on it like a flea on a dog, no way was that one getting away, let the ferret have a rummage around while Myself and Marv had a drink in the currant bun, nothing else showed so packed up and had a walk around the perimeter and found a few more sets, but as I had only been asked to do the driveway I stuck to that. Packed away the gear and had a walk over to the farm house to tell him the result rabbits 2 - me 2 which I know is a measley bag and probably not worthy of a write up but still 2 less for the dudes driveway. the farmer was out so told his wife and left my number should he feel the need to call, going to call later to thank him and hopefully talk him into letting me do a little more, there are still 2 that I know of lol, who knows it might be worthwhile in the long term. So although it was a painful morning it was quite enjoyable to get out on my own and relax away from it all, even if now I feel like I could do with half a dozen piriton and some better tweezers to get these splinters out Hope I didn't bore you too much lol 3 Quote Link to post
