It's one of them things i guess. I'm usually fecking cursing him all day for doing it, until he puts something up and catches it we would have never know about unless he had ranged. He gets better if you work him hard and knacker him.

i like my black dog to work close when working a wood hes is a read plessure.... he works about 10/15 foot in frount till he hit game an you can see the chage in him but he is still calm and its upm at his feet and then its on lol....some dogs lead from the frount and some follow other dogs ....

My bitch used to bugger off and hunt on her own every time another dog came with us   She was brilliant when working alone.   A very dominant and independant nature.   She just wanted everything

See mine is more like a hound. I can keep him close to me if i keep on top of him. But as soon as a release him to hunt, if we are in a woodland, he starts to range, usually in ever increasing circles, until he picks up scent. He will appear and disappear. Then he will find air scent and follow it to ground scent, then its nose down like a beagle, but at top speed, until he hits up his quarry, and then it's game on.

so it down to you then to keep on top off him ...recall etc

i would'nt worry to much about the dog....

at the end of the day you spend alot of time out on your own, and you know the dogs capabilities, and he seems to put enough in the bag for you.......i'd be happy with him, so dont let the dogs reactions put you down when he's around strange dogs, they got feelings just like us........lol, and there are certain people in life that we dont like being around....lol

all the best,

jay.

Dead common for dogs to act differently around other dogs, not even just strange ones.

My 2 terrier bitches, when they are together they compete like mad, one always wants to be in front of the other. Take them out without the other terrier and they are much steadier, even with strange dogs.

Aye, but to my thinking, the game isn't where i am standing, and as i dont have a bushing dog at the moment, he has to go find it himself, so its no good to me at all if he is always running about my feet, as a result i have encouraged him to go off and hunt independantly. But you are right, improved recall would be handy, it's always been an issue with him. He comes back ok, just as soon as he has 'checked in' he is off again, unless you keep telling the little bugger to stay still. He just has no 'rest' mode  Don't get me wrong if he loses me and thinks he wont find me he bricks it and comes to see where i have got to, so the bond is ther and very strong.

I think you are right jay and he feels a bit put out when another new dog arrives, and has a bit of a mardy moment.

To me it sound's like the little fellow need more constant socializing around lot's of different dog's..he obviously does not feel comfortable around stranger's so he need's to go of and find his own terittory..try keeping him on a slip and for the love of good dont let him get robbed of a kill he has made..i am sure it will all fall into place when he mature's a bit more.. :victory:

Aye, he has spent time around a fair few dogs, but as it goes, its usually the same couple over and again. He fecking loves the dogs he likes, and in a non-hunting situation is happy to mess about with different dogs. But he has always been a very independant dog, happy in his own company, since a pup. He loves being near me, wont let me go to toilet without him, until out in the field, then he is happy to hunt away all day at a distance.

Having said that he fecks off into his own space, if i make the, somethings happening noise, then he is there like a shot, but not so quick if its the come back here noise (if he knows he is near game).

He is happy as larry around people he doesnt know and will make a fuss of them in the house and yard, but has no interest in people, once in the field. In general i would say he is a confident, well socialised dog.

He gives up his kills to the bitches, but is funny with the dogs trying to rob off him. If it happens and ther other dog retrieves it, once you have laid it down, he likes to go and get it and bring it back to me anyway.

And finally, he is totally normal at night, lamping, it makes no difference what dog is about. And in a non hunting environment, i.e the park, he is fine. It;s just hunting, he doesnt like hunting with strange dogs.

The one - he has been around dogs quite a lot. Obviously way more time spent just 1:1 with me, but from a young age he has been out with JB's two lurchers, and another friends whippet and lurcher, and various other mutts. He kennels fine with other dogs, and spends time in the house and yard fine with them. He will hunt well in a pack with JB's two, and with the other dogs he sees regular, but all others are treated like he just prefers to get on with it a lone and doesnt need their interferance. I do have an old and grumpy terrier who would give him stick, but i never let them get into it, and only let them out together under strict supervision.

Don't get me wrong, he kills plenty of game around other dogs, and will run through brick walls for me, tackle anything etc. He just seems to not be so up for being in other dogs company when hunting, unless they are of his pack, so to speak. If i force him to, he takes the hump, and doesnt put his all in. It's like he knows its going to get caught anyway, so why bother. However i have noted that if he can obviously see another dog isnt gonna get anywhere near, he will then try.

Casso - what do you mean by incidents?

Aye I've known a few dogs with the same attitude to wanting to hunt by them selves , but I'd say it's slightly different with your whip he has a nose like a bassat hound so if anything has been around probably even a few days ago he'll track the fecker down. With this sent is more appealing and you can see that by the way he works, his nose is very rare a few inches off the ground lol He has ammense drive and add that to the competition of other dogs around he wants to be the first to the source of the scent and bobs your uncle lol just finding ways to get him to agree that working with you and the other dogs is in his benefit as your learning to do with him. It's all experience they hopefully learn with age

what we might call incidents and what the mutt feels about the same incident can be totally different,

a negative situation involving another dog in the field maybe involving game, it may not seem like much to us but can leave a pup with a negative charge which gets replayed in the pups mind when he finds himself in the same environment after,

so each new dog becomes like the first dog he can across in the field
