tommy ffs tell him about road work

road works does f**k all imo dogs need free running and hunted to become fit.You can walk a dog on road for miles a day but never be fit . a dog that gets free running and worked will always be fitter but you should know

road work does f**k all for a dog?? dont kid yourself.i susoect you say this to justify being a bit of a lazy git who does not walk his dogs.road work gives a dog stamina, and also keeps thier feet in check.with that statement you made, you are another one who i will chalk up as someone who talks waaash

When you think about it road work would have been an instrument of use for the greyhound men who couldn't afford any sort of injury to their expensive running dogs, so were kept safely on the lead and given plenty of road work ,with zero chance of injury,

but the same greyhound men knew the dogs needed big paddocks to exercise in ,and stretch themselves with other hounds through play and chase,

each to their own, but id rather spend a few hours out with them free running in the field than leading them on a road,,i know not everyone lives in the sticks ,but free running ,jumping ,and just been out in the fields is a more natural approach to exercise for the dogs,

yes greyhound men run thier dogs fit,and you do have a point in what you say about letting an expensive dog with no brains running free, however for him to say that road work does f**k all is plain silly.road work plays an important part in building up a dogs stamina.and also like i said keeps thier feet good, also another major factor in a running dog.

i have a deerhound/grey x bull/greyhound 7 month old 23tts he gets road walked for 40 mins then a run on a field just chasing pigeons and walked back so another 40 mins the day after he just gets running freely on a field then the day after that he gets to run along side me on a push bike for about 45-50 mins he is now slowly building up stamina do you think iam pushing him to quickly?

Free running, daily mooching, running a few bunnies etc, is a great way to keep a dog semi fit, but IMO you need to put some miles in if the dog is to build up the overall hard condition it needs to do a hard night's lamping or a day's coursing. I've tried both ways, and my dogs which have had a few weeks of bike trotting before the first day or night of the season are much fitter overall: they blow less, are less likely to damage joints and muscles: its a bugger if a promising young dog does a major tear of its gracilus on the first day/night and is laid up for weeks.

Of course overall fitness only comes from actually working, but the base work done by trotting has so many benefits: stronger heart capable of beating faster over a greater length of time without suffering, stronger joints in toes and legs, firmer muscles able to work for distance as opposed to over just short periods, tougher ligaments and tendons too. It's the whole package. If I take a dog out on the bike for say, 5 miles at a good trot, one that has previously just been mooching, sprinting and messing about for an hour a day all summer, I can see the difference in the muscle tone after just that one bike ride: it really is surprising, I don't bike mine miles every day, usually a 10 miler once a week, and a couple of 5 milers, just steady trotting. The other days they mooch, run rabbits, chase balls, swim etc.
