Good post Simo, with some interesting replies from those that walked the walk

Back in the 80's I knew of a couple of lads who made a good living from their deeds. Serious dog lads who knew it was all for the sheckle. They put the milage in and grafted hard, i know, because I was lucky enough to accompany them once or twice. :ninja: It certainly opened my eyes.

So far one member on here hasn't yet posted, who very kindly let me brows through his old and battered diarys from back in the day. Its all there! :good:

The realisation of what can be achieved is quite staggering, to be fair, it was a different time, but the results...! :icon_eek: It made some spectacular reading!

I told him he should put them to print... I hope someday he does.

yes i have also lived off poaching, but like poacher said got better money for the birds, the 80,s were i time for being made redundant, evrytime i got a job the place went bust a year later

what is/was intresting, is the other unconvenal methods you use to catch game , like driving birds in to a longnet,, or we had a place where we bent over some rabbit netting and got birds entrapped we would gat a dozen or so, in just a few mins.

and like Chalkie,,, them rimmys shure are the tool, even back then you could get one for £ ton. no questions

Back in the 80's we all subsidised our income with poaching, guns, nets and dogs all played their part, things were pretty desperate at times and scrap also played its part,Thatcher turned honest men into theives, even me.

I'll agree that Thatcher f****d the working man, (and not in a nice way !! LOL !!), but come on...you can't equate the 80's with the 50's !!!! There was tough times after the war, but the 80's there was no rationing, people wern't starving, we all poached and collected scrap, but there was no way we would go as hungry as people did in the 50's, 60's, etc !!

Cheers.

S.yorks was booming in the 50s and 60s and everybody was in employment not so in the 80s.and the old pitmen who i was on strike with said it was a lot worse and could only compare it to the war years.

heard of dogs that are stashed away in daylight and funnily enough are only "exercised" at dark.

once i was buying some kennels and shown a lurcher that was kept in a garage in day time.

and few years ago frm a local gossip ive heard of a wildlife enthusiast whos springer and lurcher were kept in shed and only walked at night.

so i think theres people who dont advertise dogs they own ,

i used to sheild my lurchers kennel area from prying eyes and either went out at dawn or dusk.

Poach, if you beleve that life was better in the 50's and 60's than it was in the 80's, then you are looking thru' the rose coloured glasses that wern't available in the North East at that time........

sorry fella didnt realise your old grandpa is the only man in the world who can catch game with a wire .... the reason people use a drag net on the river is that you can get in and out quickly catching the maximum amount of fish in the shortest time .... but if you want one for the pot you aint going to carry a fecking 50 yard 15 yard drop drag net are you ??? no you will carry a snare in and out with a fish in minuets .........

I never said he was the only one who could catch salmon with a wire, it was your comment saying it was easy, I can assure you, it is far from easy. Boiling an egg, buttering toast, scratching your baws is easy, snaring a salmon isn't. How many folk reading this could honestly say they could go to a river tomorrow and snag a salmon? Not many I can assure you. I agree with you regarding the net but you must agree, that is easier than snaring a salmon and is more likely to get you caught and also marks the salmon. I can't be arsed arguing with you to be honest, if you think snaring a salmon is easy, fair do's

I love the romantic notion of the lurcher feeding the family but can i ask, and this is probably better aimed at lurcher owners who kept them a few years ago. Have any of our members actually genuinely used a lurcher to help them through tough times, by putting food on the table and perhaps the game dealers/butchers trays......

many a time in the 80s 3 young uns to feed -- poached the odd pheasant aswell

- kept the local chinese takeaway supplied to get a few quid in ,,, even poached the odd allotment ..:whistling: had a good customer base down the pub for rabbits pheasant and mushrooms ....
