what so you cant tell the difference beetween a hare and a rabbit ? :hmm:

Last year, around this time of year, I was lamping down Notts way, and we saw what appeared to be four rabbits in a field; the dog was slipped, and three rabbits ran for cover and a leveret ran out into the field ! Also, I was judging a lamping competition in Northumberland, and the same thing happened ! None of us were expecting half grown hares, but it happened. I'm sure most of us can tell the difference between a hare and a rabbit, but in these circumstances, none of us did !!

Cheers.

December 2006 my lurcher pup lifted what I thought was a rabbit only the cry gave me the initial suspicion it was a young hare I dont usually lamp them or bother about them much at all in the day as the dogs I had were not up to it. It was a surprise I think as has been said previous Hares are breeding at different times I wonder if this is a defense mechanism an evoloutionary response to the combines and silage cutters or a result of climate change. who knows. I might benefit the population some how

done the same about 3 weeks ago. it was on a small park next to a school and it was clamped down. straight away a thought rabbit and slipped the dog, next minute it gets up after a 30 yard run the dog had it, when it got up a seen the ears straight away. seen another 3 after that, all small leverets. was suprised

I"m pretty certain its to do with the change in the weather, have come across some very late summer leverets

For some reason i can tell the difference no matter what size the leveret/hare is or rabbit infact, but back to the topic they have been breeding just about all year round for the past 7 yr's in my neck of the woods, i was out shooting bunnies last week with a messer of here and we spotted god knows how many leverets about the 3/4 bunnie size, and before the messer says anything that leveret i shot at was in the pissing down rain. :icon_redface: .
