The Cockle Man

Recommended Posts

When i was a nipper my old fella would take me and my brothers to the local working mens club on a staurday,we'd drink coke, eat crisps and be a right royal pain in the arse.At some point during the night someone would say "the cockle mans here !!" in would walk a chap in a white overall carrying a large basket full of shell fish, cockles, mussells, whelks, winkles etc etc. We'd buy a bag of cockles each and a bag of whelks for my old fella, drown everything in vinegar and watch it drip all over your legs when the paper bag started leaking lol.

Must be 30 years since i last seen a cockle man,is there such a thing anymore ?

AAhh... a memory from the past.

Bingo, the smoke-engulfed room , a million and one "woodbines" creating its own ozone.

The caller, fat, with sideburns like lamb chops.....

"Two fat ladies.....88"

"Doctors Order.....number 9"

And then, a moment of releif..the cockle man. And the silly wooden fork that i could never actually get any cockles on and ended dipping grubby little finger into the watered-down vinegar

Oh yes, those were the days my friends......i thought they'd never end....la la la la

as a nipper being 'babysitted' by my dad in the local wmc (affilliated, of course!) - while my dad, grandad and uncle were drinking pints of mixed, black n tan and playing crib or darts, me and my cousins would wreak havoc in the concert room (nowt on on a saturday afternoon) - wed be scoffing bensons crisps, big d nuts, pickled eggs, jars of cockles and those packets of crackers with pickled onions and the famous wooden knife - happy days -especially the hand pulled shandy that was mainly bitter - leathered at 6 years old no wonder i like a pint now is it. got a good education on the one armed bandit too off some of the regulars!!

good memories of more innocent times!!!!
