Most would also like - a vote on the european constitution return of capital punishment immigration capped tougher punishment on criminals police on the beat None of it will happen, makes me feel like we should kick all the politicians out and start from scratch. Much rather see the citizens deal with crime. If you have any evidence to back that up I'm sure everyone here would like to see it. poacher3161 1,766 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Share Posted July 26, 2009 The return of national service is a must as every thing else has failed due to breakdown of discipline in schools and sociaty.My father did his NS in the royal vetinary core and was stationed in the middle east after training at melton mowbrey and some of the storys he told as i was growing up were a dam sight more intresting than if he had onley worked in the steel works all his life.HE beleives they should bring it back TOMMOROW.atb Quote Link to post Share on other sites
COMPO 54 Posted July 27, 2009 Report Share Posted July 27, 2009 In principle i agree with national service, but i am sure that the volunteer professional soldiers would not want to have to lead a load of chavs and foreigners around........but national service could include other roles that benefit the country! skitz the police are citizens, its a civilian police service not a gendarmie. I think national service would work if, it screened the conscripts for roles, in Italy people are conscripted into the police the carabinieri are conscripted police serving nationally. we could also use them in the NHS and possibly other public sector roles (1/4 of all NHS professionals are already foreign born!) we could have dedicated army,air force and naval units purely for the conscripts, these units may need english teachers amongst their staff....... as well as needing other specialist staff to ensure the conscripts behave and toe the line, that they understand what they are required to do and regarding the immigrants amongst the conscripts ensure that if they dont toe the line they dont qualify for residency some other way! but i believe in principle its a good idea, but should include all public sector roles, but only with specialist leaders with the required skills on top of the existing service personnel not instead of them Quote Link to post Share on other sites

We would have more troops and less immigration. Just a thought. My father enlisted in the RAF on Sept 11 1939, despite being, at 26, 6 years over conscription age. He served with 55 Squadron until it was broken up in 1946. He was implacably opposed to conscription. As has been said already, the last guy you want fighting alongside you is some clown who has been dragged in like it or not. Compo's idea about non-military service has merit, but just think about the infrastructure costs. Takes a year to train these guys then you get a year's reluctant work out of them having tied up half your professionals in training duties. RicW Quote Link to post Share on other sites
