Greyhounds were bred to catch hares, an can no longer do it, now we have tightly bred true to type coursing dogs, which can do what the greys of yesteryear could do, and to me thats like using a show bull over a tested bull or a fly ball collie over a hard grafted hill collie?? If we are putting the best WORKING PROVEN base blood in, why compromise on the running dog an use a dog only fit for tracks an short distances when there are sighthound saturated GRAFTERS out there???
I don't know what that has to do with rearing a pup, but your spot on, thay are fast and can hang on better than any thing else so use em.

I raise my pups softly softly loads of attention, and treat them the same when they grow up and they worship me, but when I bark the little shits stand to attention and take notice lol

Yas know some yrs ago there was a few xs of peds X greyhounds about and what I seen of them they all had good speed the ability ta stay a while and they worked cover well ,the Bilco dog was a scratch dog his welps the males covered lots from street curs ta coursing type dogs of the day deerhound greys all the to saluki types they. All performed at there given vocation .theres a lot ta be said fa the right performance breeds ,there's plenty speed ta be found in the non peds ta cover any base breed and they will do a job covering holes etc ,a non ped whippet to me his a type that fits the criteria thirty two pound limit all above are scratch type whippetgrews .the best Bilco bred animal I seen was around twenty two and roach backed his hind set was equally to the back of his head ,stay longer than the deerhound xes we ran he was mainly a used has a day dog long ears he was way above average did I own him no but my old friend did we both pooled 2pound fifty each so we could get him .legend in the field back here he was he killed them all over including some fen land.his grandma tail was moss field Margaret illustrious ped breeding .atb bill
bill back in 1972 I used a whippet over a coursing bitch of mine, and seem to remember some of them names the dog was in south yorks and called A1, if any one knows of him, the pups off him had level backs but one of the bitches off him threw a roach back bitch that was very fast and could hang on for ever, I have an odd photo but its a colly thread and my dogs aint collies.lol

Because they suit me and my type of hunting I don't want or require a speed machine and I'm not a fan of sighthound saturated dogs with the type of dog I keep you've got a ideal baseline to work and breed off alot of collie greyhounds being bred today are no more than collie marked greyhounds that have poor coats feet no bone and fine greyhoundy heads on them they're not for me. Regards Collie John
thanks for your answer, just how little sight hound can you genuinely get away with for what you do, before a pure colly would do, again genuine question.

Bill I don't look at it has evolution hunting has gone backwards to many do gooders modern technology ie camera phones CCTV and stupid laws have ruined the lurched game alot of lads especially the coursing lads have thrown the towel in its just not worth all the agro I feel sorry for the younguns coming into the lurcher game today the halcyon days of our sport are behind us alot of young lads are misguided about dogs and quarry and go down the wrong road which is a shame the lurcher game is f****d the type of dogs people will keep in time will change to more mooching types unless you want to keep a dog for the show scene lol.Regards Collie John
as an owner of coursing dogs for almost 50 years, i know very little about colly crosses, your next litter if I understand you right will be less than 1/8 greyhound why do this, a genuine question mate, atb two crows.

It's each to there own pal I just pursue the rabbits and the odd bit of feather and the type I keep are ideally suited to that task I'm not a fan of speed machines they tend not to make old bones but its each to their own.Regards Collie John
I think for what your doing your bang on the money but like the op said finding one without going to hancock not easy these days.

You'd do better to wait 'til someone chooses parents carefully and breeds a litter for their own use. Having said that, the best collie/grey I've ever had was bred by a greyhound breeder when a good bitch came back from being lined and was covered again by the farm collie. The litter had both pure greyhounds and first crosses.
Many good litters will have a touch of some other breed in there and if the parents did what you want then what harm? Good luck with your search anyway, I'm sure something will turn up.
good post mate, but back when plummer was in charge, having another bread in them would not be tolerated, and especially saluki blood, and these days a lot seem to like the mix of coursing and hearding types in a general purpose dog.

just read that I knew most of it, but not the bit about blood vessels, my coursing bred bitch often on cold mornings has her hair stood up, on real cold whet days when I see folk walking their dogs, I always say it would rather have its nose up its ars lol.

Mixes of Lakeland border was added in some lines for the best I believe my bro had rillington from George hard little worker worked all below ,right size right jacket right temp he produced blue. Tans black tans when getting lurchers .most and best of all he produced good grafters..them beddie type I found when Xes out to other runner were superior .seem ta click chocolate type seen them in the beddie xs fawn which some say don't come do on f1 gutch common lines throw them occasionally those Black and Tan rough Norfolk types from the seventies with beddie influence the red and tans that were stunning looking animals bedlington influence the rainbow has many colours the gene pool of the bedlington pretty much the same. Atb bill
sounds about right forty od years ago my coursing dogs had beddy in, but every pup I bred was smooth coated, yet other people got broken coats later on, so can take generations to come out.
