  1. the old question were they better back then, well for my twopenerth I think there were better working dogs available to the lurcher breeder for breeding f1 lurchers, but I think generally stockman ship has improved and we can potentially get a bit more from our dogs fitness wise because of that, so who knows, where coursing dogs are concerned lucky was bred from the same basic bloodlines as present day dogs, but in better times with coursing being legal, so would have more running than a current dog, this does not automatically make him a better dog though.

  2. nice looking dog, from the photo he looks just like one of our line bred coursing dogs, our dogs are (or should be)the result of crossing best to best mostly saluki/greyhound, though there ancestors did have other blood as well, we normally only outcross now and then to good saluki blood, what are the main breeds in the stags makeup and do any outcross take place just out of interest.

  3. if you want a spaniel get a spaniel, cocker or springer its you choice, all the others are a novelty, its like lurchers if you want a good bidable rabbiter buy from parents like that if you want a hare dog buy a line bred hare dog, if you want bigger ore teeth buy a 243.

  4. I have 2 cocker pups left one chock dog one choc and tan bitch well bred, mine and the sire out 2/3 days a week picking up all season these have not been picked over there was only four and were having one each that's why I bred them I now have 4 generations here if your interested pm me cheers ime in lincs

  5. fast dogs with good mouths can kill quick, I know cos ive had em, I also know that it is not long beffore they run out of steam, recovery might be ok 1 or 2 runs, then it gets tough, right so far, on the other hand some biged up dogs on the scene today get dragged round for 5 mins pluss and kill in a dyk, I have had these to, the trick is finding one that can do both as and when required, that's a proper dog, nothing in COURSING is cast in stone, I have had coursing dogs for 47 years so I haven't rushed in to making these statements, and I wont argue about it either no point, as for bull keep it.

  6. :hmm:I've met a few lads off the Net that are catching up the coneys,...they are all nice enough guys,..keen on their sport,. and in the modern vernacular, 'Mad for it'..

Like many other Veteran hunters,...I was just the same,....no different..

Truth is, in many of these out of the way areas,..where rabbits are in abundance,..the word is now out and like everything else in life,..it is frequently, a 'dog eat dog' world,..and if you don't take your share, some other fecker definitely will,...so,..lads often, go out of there way, to harvest the shushis and bag up at every opportunity...This is a fact of life,...if it bothers anyone and makes them feel envious or inadequate,.their best and surest remedy, is to get out there..unleash their jukels,... and give it a go...

Personally,..I think it is beneficial for all men to have, at least one good, memorable day or night out in their lives...

They need to hunt and kill the game in quantity,..to realize, that it ain't Rocket Science,..just good craic..and maybe,.when they carry the quarry off the hills, they can get it out of their system...and move on...

With young lurchers (and young humans),.it pays to put catch-able quarry in front of them,.it calms matters down and mentally sorts their heads out. :thumbs:good post mate me and a pal used to go to the dales every week and rarely went bellow a ton eccept I remember getting snowed off and just getting 70 spoiled us in the end we did not want to go out at home and get a dozen if you lucky. hardest job like you said getting em back to the motor atb two crows

  7. cant believe this is still on going I have had both. my pure dog luke lamped and coursed only hare and rabbit and was a gooden.my head always says line bred. my heart says pure. whatever your view one thing is fact(and I don't mean freaks hear )if you want to course and catch hares consistently and properly at proper time of year a good dollop of saluki is vital fact.

  8. there are people who love whippets deerhounds greyhounds and salukis(and long may this continue) all have been used to hunt the brown hare all have coursed under rules all have been crossed with one another in our attempt to get a better dog for running and catching hares single handed, but the fact is the mixing of saluki and greyhound blood is the best way of going about it. and then bread best to best there is no argument the facts are in front of us. all the arguing in the world wont change facts. the modern line bred coursing dog refined in England cannot be bettered for coursing and catching brown hares consistently in this country.

  9. in the early 70s my dogs were saluki cross beddy grey and used mainly for coursing and some mouching / ferreting it was not till the late 70s that I started lamping and found sal crosses plenty good enough and you still have a dog for day time big rabbits most of the negativity about this cross was spawned by plummer and died with him . back then all the rabbiters would of died rather than use saluki blood how times have changed.

  11. litter wastage is a horrible term, so it is important if breeding first crosses where the parents come from either end of the spectrum (IE collie x greyhound) to be prepared to match owners with individual pups, I know we don't live in an ideal world but if we breed we are responsible. I am glad I am a sight hound man but you still have to be care full dog swappers abound in all walks of the lurcher game and good pups are often turned into wastage by bad dog men. I wonder how many dogs the good dog men get through beffor you see the superstar ?. ATB two crows.
