  1. Well I set off with my borrowed ferret and my lurcher this morning on our first solo ferreting trip. My friend had pointed me in the right direction saying ‘just go for a stroll’, which was soothing and ‘don’t lose my ferret’ which wasn’t. The first thing I discovered was that I was in a field with a horse the size of a garden shed, with a smaller friend. After a slightly alarming few minutes where they worked out if we were a threat and I discovered all my stock training had worked as my dog did as I told him to, the horse and pony decided to help and followed us for the rest of
  2. lurchergrrrl's advice is great. I've trained a few rescue lurchers now and have gone through the steps she describes with good results. And Simoman's right too - let her get the idea that she can decide whether or not to come back to you and you're gonna have nothing but trouble!! I agree the last thing you want is a running dog forever on the lead, spending time on the basics now will pay off in the long term. I learned that the hard way
  3. The dog knows more than I do mate! He's been ferreting with me, we've just always had someone with more experience along with us. Now I'll find out if I was really paying attention
  4. The person who has been showing me the ropes is lending me one of his ferrets for a few hours tomorrow and I'm off out with my lurcher to see what we can catch. It will sound stupid to you old hands but I've never been out ferreting on my own before and I'm really excited but also nervous. Both me and my dog have learned a lot and it's time to try out our skill, but please wish us luck and if things go well I'll be able to post a photo or two on here tomorrow. Or I might be digging til Sunday of course...................
  5. Someone from Lurcher Link has lost her lurcher pup. It's now presumably been out all night without shelter. Any help would be great, could you keep your eyes open for her please? http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=43272 Many thanks everyone.
  6. My first was a tall skinny boy called Johnny Angel, like in the song. Back in 1976

No sign of her anywhere after 5 people searching
  8. I think if you work your dogs frequently you build a bond with them naturally through the experience of hunting together. If you have a pet dog or hunt infrequently you have to find other ways to build that bond. I can see my dog's respect for me and the bond between us has increased each time we've been out hunting together. I was raised with outdoor working collies. The bond between them and my grandad was as deep and strong as any I've seen. I think if you don't work your dogs hard you have to work harder to find other ways to build a relationship with them. I must say I've always thou
  9. Just remembereed this one too....... Love many, trust a few and always paddle your own canoe
  10. 'Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were no doors before' Joseph Campbell And from Nietzsche, of course... 'One should die proudly when it is no longer possible to live proudly' 'The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself'
  11. What's happening than? Anyone offering her a home?
  12. Looks like a great day out and the dogs look totally on form. Lovely to see Nel with her catch!
  13. I have to say I think it's a shame to mutilate your dog for the sake of a couple of weeks inconvenience. If you castrate him too early you may inhibit his development but at any age, why do it just to make life easy for what's only a very brief time. I agree that castrated dogs can still make good workers/hunters but why do that to a dog if you don't have to? You might want to look at this link, too. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=34971 Just read your post about this in the earth dogs section - want to get you story straight?

  15. earth&hounds you have a pm - don't shoot him yet!
  16. Same here - my dog shakes a dummy like a terrier but returns live rabbits.
  17. Number 17 is pretty much what I live my life by! And from now on I'm going to rigorously observe number 8.

  19. I know these are contraversial but this is for a dogs that's lucky to be alive and onit's absolute last chance. So any know which makes are good or what to look for when buying them? Thanks.
  20. Get up at 6.45 before she kicks off? You're not rewarding anything then I'm not experienced at these things as my dogs live in the house, but is it safe to kennel her with your lurchers? I know some people have lost good terriers when a fight has kicked off leaving the terrier dead and the lurcher/s injured.
  21. Read this thread then went straight off to ebay to have a look. I had no idea you could buy replica eggs - not the same thrill as finding them yourself but beautiful things none the less AND no harm done
  22. I don't understand why rescues won't rehome to working homes and even less why they won't rehome a dog that's not going to be worked anyway. As Missie says there are occasional heated debates on Lurcher Link but it's a much more tolerant environment than the others and a number of members there do hunt. North Lakes Rescue, which may not exist anymore, used to rehome to working homes too. Hope your OH finds her dog and I agree you shouldn't hide what you do. There's no need for such a division between rescues and working homes, in fact many people do both and unless we're upfront about that a
  23. Mine are chipped and tattooed. Personally I'd rather get done for illegal activities (although of course I don't do anything illegal, obviously) than get away with it and lose my dogs.
  24. Well done LL. There's something so rewarding about seeing a rescue dog begin to blossom. MOST of the time I think it's worth all the hard work
