  1. Report it to Lurcher Search - they're set up for this http://www.lurcher.org/lsuk/ Also you could ask local vet to check it for a microchip. And have you checked it's ear for a tattoo? Also, have a look here, see if it matches any descriptions... http://www.lurcherlink.org/llink/forum/viewforum.php?f=12
  2. I love that second painting - have been thinking about it since I first saw it. Wish I had the money, I'd buy it like a shot. Beautiful paintings.
  3. I'd love to go digging with a terrier but i'm 50 years old and a woman and i don't have the strength or stamina for that kind of work. But I do love terriers and want one in my household so I've got myself a pup this year for ratting and bushing. Work/sport/hunting, they're just words, but I bitterly regret being too old (and the wrong sex) to own at least one bloody good earth dog before I'm underground myself.
  4. I think they're relying on the man not wanting to do violence to a woman. I bet if it was a woman in the boat she'd have twatted the protesters with an oar after about 30 seconds. If she was menopausal, like me, make that 5 seconds..............
  5. Didn't know that about modern chips, that's an improvement then. I agree tattoos can be removed by cutting off the ears, I've seen the photos of dogs that has happened to (racing greys though rather than dogs with the kind of tattoos we're talking about). I'm thinking anyone willing to do that would be willing to deface a freezemark though? Just adding to thoughts to the discussion, since I seem to be one of the few people who doesn't like the idea
  6. I'd rather ear tattoo - it's linked to a national data base like the microchip but is more reliable. I don't trust microchips, which I know can travel round the body, malfunction etc and we've all heard the stories of pounds trying to check for microchips with a reader that doesn't even have batteries in. A tattoo is there, readable with the naked eye and hard to remove. The freeze mark still ultimately relies on the microchip. It may well be a better deterrant, of course, because it's so visible but my gut reaction - not rational at all - is that I'd be reluctant to disfigure my dogs in this
  7. For vatious reasons it's been a slow start to the season for us, but we had a good few hours out today and came home with 10 rabbits. I gave my new hob his first outing and didn't lose him so all in all a good day. My jill did bite my ear and drew rather a lot of blood but we've made up now. A few photos then. No action shots - I don't know how people manage to take them along with everything else!
  8. I took a break from this site for a while when a thread about Clarissa Dickson-Wright decended into a discussion about how 'you wouldn't want her sitting on your face, would you?'. SOME men (or more probably boys) on this site write some demeaning shit about women fairly often, so no wonder women get pissed off sometimes. Personally I've noticed a contrast between the way I've been welcomed into the hunting world by the men I've met, and who have taken me seriously and treated me with respect and the sort of toss I've often seen written on here. When I first got started and ran into blokes i
  9. Thanks for that. I'll start the hob first then, he's much bigger and harder than the jill.
  10. Oh, apologies, not been on for a while, I'll have a look around.
  11. I have a jill and a hob, brother and sister, just over three months old. How old should they be before I work them? Thanks
  12. Was that the tri colour bitch? There was also a fantastic tri colour dog there on Saturday with a really good head. Came second I think. From what little I saw the terrier judges were doing a better job.
  13. Good luck in your search hyperion. For what it's worth, for the first time (so far) I disagree with skycat's post. I think you have to look really deeply at rescue dogs. They're often stressed, exhausted, malnourished and may well have been badly treated. They often look like shit and are unresponsive. You need to look for potential and some gut reaction to the dog and trust your own judgement, plus establish just how much work you're willing to put in. I've got two rescue lurchers, both (I think!) fantastic dogs, both very good workers. They took about four months to get physically fit and se
  14. I don't think we spoke then but I remember your dogs - I was with friends who have recently got themselves a bull x and we were eyeing them all up. Nice dogs you've got! Meant to say before, they seemed to be having trouble getting entrants to the terrier classes - don't know if that was true but it was the impression I got. Don't know where all the terrier men had got to?
  15. Oi monkeychops! Watch what you say about women I spoke to a lot of people Strong Stuff but maybe you? Saw a few of dogs wearing what I thought was your handywork there! The thing about showing is that even if it's just a bit of fun I think it should be seen to be fair. This morning when they announced the working dog class they actually said your dog didn't have to work to enter Having said all that, the lurcherworld people were very friendly and worked bloody hard all weekend, I got some useful feedback from one of the judges and I had a lot of fun, so overall I'm not complain
  16. Despite winning a first and a third myself (well, my dogs did) I have to say I thought the judging at Tatton was inexplicable at times..........

    latin?

Great tattoo and good sentiment, too (unless you have a family like mine - what's the latin for 'run for your life' ?!)
  18. When I got one of my dogs, at about 2 years old, she was indifferent to cats. Then the neighbourhood cats taunted her relentlessly from the top of the garden fence and now she hates them. Last year on holiday, someone had brought a cat camping with them . It had crossed the campsite from their caravan and was hunting outside my van when I let my dog out for a wee. She had it and killed it in a second - she tossed it like a terrier and that was that, I had no time to intervene. The owners were incredibly reasonable. I also have a dog who hates cats so much we couldn't pass one in the street
  19. Well I wanted a docked pup but ended up with an undocked one. The parents have naturally short tails so I'm hoping it won't grow too long and I want it for bushing and ratting, not earth work, so I'm hoping it'll cope OK. I found lots of litters that weren't docked and only a few that were, so I think the legislation is having an effect. As for showing, it's a laugh, it's something to do at the shows and lots of dogs seem to enjoy it. As long as you don't take it too seriously, or make the mistake of thinking show winner automatically equals good worker, what's the big deal?
  20. My friend had a problem like this - her bitch was in season but the dog didn't seem to know what to do. We took them somewhere they could run free together and ignored them. They ran and played together for ages and then the next thing we knew they were tied and the job was done! I think running and playing together is necessary for the bitch to be fully ready.
  21. What would this group do that Lurcher Search and Dog Lost don't do already? Not saying it's not a good idea, but there are 2 national organisations trying to respond to dog thefts as it is and unless you'd be doing something different maybe it'd be more effective to support what exists already?
  22. Thanks everyone, I'll just crack on then Oh, and very funny LG....
  23. I pick my new terrier pup up in two weeks time - she'll be seven weeks old. I feed both my adult dogs on raw, but I got them as adults so didn't have to start them off as pups. Any tips about what I should feed her, anything I should avoid and how I can make sure she gets all the nutrition she needs as she grows? Many thanks.
