  1. When I bought my CZ452 .17 (Dowlings, South Bucks), I asked about a cleaning kit and they recommended the bore snake. Mine is a Hoppes. The cord has a loop at the back end, I assume to pull it back through. I cut through this and the whole lot pulls through. It's tight, but not painfully so. I use a squirt of Bisley gun oil on the front brush, if I've shot over ten shots, or so. Mine fires spot on after cleaning. My first shot this week was a rabbit at 142 paces (130 yards +?) with 2 inch hold over for a chest shot, a 2 foot leap and a dead rabbit.
  2. I went out on a bunny cull this afternoon with my CZ 452 .17. My third shot sounded a bit flat, but still dropped the rabbit at yards. I checked the ejected case and it was split from the neck to the opening. In all I fired 18 rounds of Remington .17 and four had split with no apparent loss of power. I'd never checked before i'd read Deker's post.
  3. I've always just used a Bore Snake after every session on my CZ452. A squirt of Bisley Gun oil at the front brush and that's it. If I've fired around twenty shots, I'll give it two pulls through. Dropping it down the barrel has never been a problem. My rifle is still firing spot on several years down the line. Sorry Dekers, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.
  4. We make pasties and burgers from pigeons and rabbits. The rabbit loins we keep separate for stir fries and also wrap in streaky bacon and bake them with a herb pesto. Plus of course you can't beat old fashioned rabbit / game pie with whatever you have spare, or a thick rabbit and veg casserole on a winter night.
  5. I moved to a different area and informed my previous FO of my move. He provided me with the new FO's contact email and emailed my details, phone etc.. I moved my gun box into my new house and continued shooting, while waiting to be contacted by the new FO. Six weeks later he made contact, sending me a new application form needing witnesses, etc. He then made a visit to inspect the box and count all my ammunition (I shoot rifles), plus a bit of a lecture on safety, while trying to reduce the amount of ammo I hold. I have an open license and this interview was worse than my first. Afterwards, he
  6. My farmer puts them in their "dead bin", where they put all the small farm animals that die. These are burned and the ashes go on the muck heap for ferterlising the fields. We have plenty of carrion birds, including kites, which make short work of anything thrown in the hedge.
  7. I zero my HMR at 100 yards and expect my groups to be well within a 20 mm bull, off a bipod and can get better if I try breathing and holding the stock. As paulus's chart shows, it's just about flat from 50 to 120 on a still day. Your 1.5 inches high at yards sound a bit strange. Were you using a 20 grn bullet? With a 17 grn, I only had a 10mm rise at 100, when zeroed at 120. My review of my HMR http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cz-452-varmint-17-hmr-rimfire/
  8. My Webley Venom Viper came with a shrouded barrel as standard, which reduced the "crack", but was not quiet. I unscrewed the end cap and fitted a silencer adapter, which was available online. I then fitted a lightweight SAK silencer onto this. Now it just puffs. This is my review. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/rifle-weblet-viper-venom-22-carbine-pcp/
  9. I saw plenty of young ones in January last year, but this year I didn't even see many adults, until early March and thought the snow had knocked them back, but now they out in force. Good job too, my wife has just told me, we have run out of bunny burgers.
  10. Despite one of the hardest winters we've had for years, there seem to be plenty of young rabbits about on all my permissions this year. Maybe it's because it's been too cold and wet for me to go out and shoot the adults, that there has been an explosion? Anyone else noticed this?
  11. There are some great ideas on this forum. Will give this one and the rabbit dippers a go. I'm making more rabbit pasties today. Good job the pigeon and rabbits are fat free, shame about the cheese!
  12. Two points not mentioned here are:1 Are you using the standard trigger set up in your CZ 452? My groups improved with the lightweight trigger mod. 2: The 452 is known for it's offset machining of the stock, often touching the barrel, any expansion of the barrel causing the floating barrel to be pushed to one side. Even a few thou can be magnified at 200 yards. This was the case on my Varmint 16 inch heavy barrel, which was easy to remedy with some emery paper on the offending woodwork. I boresnake mine after every outing, usually not more than twenty shots and after several years, use have no
  13. I've had a couple of bad boxes of Winchester subs lately. Very accurate when they fire. Never had a misfire with Eley subs in my Magtech 7022 semi, but not so accurate and unavailable locally at the moment.
  14. This is my hunter's pasty recipe. You get a lot of pasties from one rabbit. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/rabbit-and-pigeon-pasty-with-chorizo/
  15. I used the treasurer of my fishing club and a mate who was an accountant, now retired. Had no problems.
  16. Looks good. I make my own cider, some with honey added. I'll give this one a try.
  17. I soaked some of mine in brine overnight, just once. They were tasteless after. Ended up putting the meat in a Korma mix. Give me the full flavour every time. Slow cooker is best.
  18. When I butcher my rabbits, I save the back loins for various meat dishes and with the remaining meat, I make very tasty rabbit burgers. Check out: http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/bunny-burgers-with-chorizo/
  19. I was living in South Bucks and had my FAC with air rifle, .22lr and HMR from farms I'd shot with the 12 lb air rifle. When I got another farm, I asked the FO to meet me to approve the farm. He came out, walked the farm with me, which he approved for HMR, then suggested applying for an open ticket to save him the bother of coming out again, as he thought I was suitable after only two years. If you have other farms, get him to come out to them, it's his job.
  20. First time out this year with the HMR, I bagged my first two rabbits of 2013 today. This land has no real cover on three sides and a warren covered with blackthorn at the end. As I approached from the shaded side, I could see through my scope, activity among the thorn bushes, but no targets and within 200 yards, white tails bobbing back to safety. Twenty yards out from my side and eighty yards from the blackthorn is a feed bin for the horses, with plenty of straw on the ground and got down prone and waited with the rifle on it's bi-pod. After half an hour, having ignored several magpies skippi
  21. It probably depends on the land you are shooting over, wide open with little cover it has to be the HMR due to the power and range of this rifle, while pockets of cover with shots up to 70 yards, then the .22lr is ideal and cheaper ammo. This is my HMR http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cz-452-varmint-17-hmr-rimfire/ This is my .22lr http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/magtech-7022-mossberg-7022-22-semi-automatic-rimfire/
  22. It's that time of year, when nothing is about. Much of my land is flooded out, including my most productive warren and just hope the rabbits have moved to higher ground. This time last year it was mild and I was already seeing plenty of young ones. The landowner likes to see me about, as it keeps the p*****s off his land and for me it helps spot any recent burrows. Usually manage a couple of pigeons for my trouble. Better to be on the land than watching TV, or on here!
  23. Just read this thread end to end, well what else is there to do on a freezing cold day? Both weapons have their ideal uses, it's horses for courses. I would use my .22lr all the time for rabbits, but in many instances I can't get close enough on open fields and that's where the HMR comes in with accuracy at range. Beyond 130 yards you need to start looking for a heavier load and a more powerful rifle. Mine's a CZ 452 Varmint with a 16 inch barrel by the way. Check out my review. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/cz-452-varmint-17-hmr-rimfire/
  24. Just received a Gun Tuff Holographic 11 mm red/green dot sight from Ramsbottom. Solid anodised ali contruction and four choices of reticule. It was easy to fit and zero, giving a dozen hits well within the 20 mm target bull. Can't wait to get out and try it in the barn.
