Hi, anyone got any tips to increase my catch rate on rats? I'm using Mk4's in wooden tunnels, mainly positioned adjacent to pheasant feeders. Caught a fair few initially but now the survivors (still lots of em) are trap shy and avoiding the boxes/ traps. Still picking up the very occasional one in traps positioned well away from the feeders but they are few and far between.

Just filled in my assorted bag returns, in summary the season very poor for duck locally but quite good for geese, in fact I think for the first time ever I shot more geese than ducks. Season highlights: two days wildfowling in Norfolk seperated by a days CWD stalking, a weeks 'fowling holiday north of the border that produced the goods as normal, good numbers of Pinks on the Humber and stopping after I had shot my self imposed limits on two consecutive flights, a late season flight of pinks when I thought they had all moved off the estuary months previous, bagged three in a b

There were one or two white greys with our local resident greylags and they were nice to see, gave some idea of the geese movements within the area. But now they are interbreeding a bit too well with the normal greylags and most of the Humber wildfowlers have a shoot on sight policy, trying to pick any white ones out of a skein in an attempt to keep the bloodline pure. Not all of them are pure white with a fair few being pied with varying amounts of white plumage. The proportion of white feathered birds within the local population is still relatively low, at a guess I would say about 1%, maybe

pinks flighting back up north from the wash this morning
mudman replied to wag's topic in Wildfowling
We were on the Humber this morning and saw three good sized skeins heading NW at height. They were not the local geese but Wash/ Norfolk pinks. Nice sight and sound, just a case now of ticking off the days until they are back with us again.... -
An update on my rifle, checked the mounts and rings, some nuts screws needed tightening a little so maybe I had found the cause of my problems. Gave the barrel a good clean and de-copper, I am supposed to be stalking tomorrow so had to take the rifle out to check the grouping this afernoon even though the weather was deteriorating. Fired two unaimed shots into a bank to dirty the barrel then set up a 100 yard range into the same bank but positioned so that the howling gale was blowing directly from behind me to the target so there was no cross wind to worry about. It also started to snow.

A starling with a BSA Meteor in .22 is the first one I remember, but it might have been a rat as I shot a few at about the same time. Reading some of these posts makes me think that the minimum age for being allowed anywhere near a gun of any sort should be about 35!!!!

No, there is no longer an agreement to allow free shooting on crown foreshore in England. It can still be leased but there is no free shooting.

Zeiss Conquest, 3-9 x 50. Seems to function as required with ref to click adjusment. Like I said previously groups with Ballistic tips are not good, with soft points absolutely appalling.

No, to be honest I do not know how much work the rifle had had before I bougt it, I got it from a gun shop on. I'll give the barrel a good scrub out and de-copper. I will also get my brother to shoot it (he shoots rifles well) and see if it may be operator error on my part.

Hi SST, excellent groups you show there, if I could achieve groups half as good I would be over the moon. in response to your questions: I bought the rifle second hand, I use a couple of shooters choice products including a copper remover, I guess I have cleaned the barrel about every 40-50 shots, last time was about 20 shots ago. Currently using Remington 95 grn accutips, I have some 95 grn winchester silvertips, 75 grn accutips and some homeloads to try out. I try not to get too worried by the lack of tight grouping because the set up is killing deer, limiting myself

About a year ago I posted that I had bought some Fenn traps from an advert in the local rag which turned out to be cheap copies. Someone replied to the effect that they were far inferior to genuine Fenn Mk4's and I should pay the few quid extra, support a british company and get quality gear. Well just to say, I could not agree more. The copies I bought are crap! Okay they do catch and kill but a number have fallen apart and have neede reassembling, a couple are unrepairable and have had to be binned. And to top it all they are a bugger to set light as I like them. So in summary, pay the f

I've got a Tikka M595 in .243, its my first rifle and I've had it for a couple of years now. Put maybe 160 rnds through it and cannot get anything like the groups talked about on most forums. I'm happy enough to hit a beer mat at 100 yards with three consecutive shots and thats with Ballistic tips, with soft points I've occasionally missed the A4 the targets drawn on! It has had a few good clean outs but with no improvement and likewise I've put a wildcat mod onto it again with no great improvement, although it does have other advantages. Next time home I'll give it another good clean, put hal

My brother bought one three years ago. He HATES it, had a fair bit of bother with it, nothing dangerous but jams and the locking nut locked on one occasion . It hardly fits him, (does it really fit anyone with such a short stock???) but the strange thing is, he hardly misses anything with it! thats why he still has it.

RIFLE CALIBRE HAVE I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE?
mudman replied to gamegunner's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
No expert myself but I hear good things about both the 6.5 x 55 and the 7mm08. I suspose everyone who has a few years under their belts will have their own personal favourites. I know the .308 is a very popular calibre for hill reds. -
Well done . An excellent account! Buck Fever is a terrible affliction/ addiction. I've recently got some new ground in Scotland and can't wait to get up there for a look around.

I have little direct experience with Muntjac as I live too far to the north of there present range in the UK. But from what I understand they cause little damage to woodland etc unless at high population densities. As with all deer species the key is management, muntjac need culling to keep numbers in check otherwise there is potential for them to do damage when numbers become excessive. I think the worse cases of damage to woodland etc in the UK have been on nature reserves where no shooting was allowed. So in the Netherlands I would advise that once the deer become firmly established they ar

Yes, I've let many a fox live which I could have easily shot. If its not bothering me, or the farmer, then why bother it? Sometimes its a case of live and let live. If the fox is potentially a problem then take it out, and the one that replaces it, and the one that replaces that one etc. But if no good is going to be achieved by doing that then there is no reason to kill them.

A friend of mine has a CWD doe which he keeps in an old pheasant pen in the woods. He is looking for a buck to make up a breeding pair before the rut. Any ideas who could supply a live buck CWD??? This animal would be for a private collection and not for release.

Where I live there are alot of urban foxes and they cause very little trouble at all. All the rubbish is now in wheelie bins which are are prettty much fox proof so the problem they did cause ripping open black bin bags is a thing of the past. Most of the food they get is either left out deliberately for them or left out to feed the birds. Also there are alot of urban green areas such as allotments and old industrial land that is alive with more typical fox food such as mice, voles and rabbits (locally to me there is also railway land with roe and pheasants). I've seen plenty of urban foxe

Well I know Dorset has alot of Sika in parts as does the New Forest. Maybe somebody with better local knowledge than me would know if they are in your locallity aswell.
-
Sound like Fallow. Which county were you in ? because they could also have been Sika but they have a much more restricted range.

£500, I would say that was an excellent deal on first sight! I would have snapped there hands off. I don't take paid days but I would not expect to get much change out of £200 for a single day shooting cull beasts.
-
Those trees in the gap between the forestry blocks look well trimmed! Appears as if there are plenty of beasts on that ground.

Roe form small herds during the winter and during late winter/early spring they do seem to move out into open ground where they are more visible giving the impression of a sudden increase in numbers. Apart from that overall Roe are doing well and spreading into new areas.

.243 and 95gr Hornady Ballistic tips (the only round I can get a decent group with). Muntjac, Roe and Fallow.
