  6. Hi lads got some terrible news this week. Doctors told me any hard work is over for me and that includes ferreting. Im totaly devastated about it. Since the first day headind for 40 yrs i made my debut,i still look forward to every ferreting trip as the first. Even family members are pressing me now to quit,i said id take a couple of weeks to decide on it,maybe the decision is made for me. How can i not hunt again and only you lads would understand looking out a window on a frosty cold morning, how hard that would be to bare. Maybe with a bit of sun on me back for the summer might change thing
  7. Ha wouldn have been as funny, if you left the door ajar.
  8. Id guess you need to start a new topic to find the answer to that buddy. Please do inform us when ya find out.
  9. I think the fleece or fine netting is the best option. I usually leave one or two cabbage unprotected to attract the pests, giving them the easier option just in case they find some little way to get into my protected crop.Believe it or not every year them couple of cabbage get invested but due to all the pests being concentrated on these couple of cabbage its easy pickings for birds and predators and they completly clean them out.
  10. Might just try them drakes thanks
  11. Ha i wont make that mistake so. I have this thing in my head they solve my slug problem. If i left them in the plot in the spring of the year before planting would they clean out all slugs do ya think.
  12. bought two la bresse hens today and a cock, just wondering any of you lads out there keep these chickens. At the moment i have them locked up in the shed at the moment as there my first chickens not sure when to let them out. If anyone has keep this breed a little info on there temperment , egg laying capabilites etc would come in useful.
  13. I have spuds, parsnip, carrot, turnip, cabbage and onions down no soft fruit, would it be wiser to let the veg get well matured before letting them in, or wait till all are lifted..
  14. Quick question lads, i know ducks are great for cleaning up slugs but how do chickens far out in gobbling up these pest in the veg plot.I would prefer to buy some hens if they done the job..
  15. Hi lads getting in a few hens soon and not sure which breed to buy. Im looking for the best multi purpose hen thats hardy. While on the subject why is the rhode island red so popular in my locality. Would be greatful for some advice
  16. Im trying the non dig system this year. Spread muck on d plot and planted my spuds on top of the ground in rows as usual, cover with straw to a depth of 3feet high 2feet wide. Its my first year trying this put what i can say is the four 40ft rows i plant in feb are sprouting under d straw. Any of ye lads tried this,or is it a waste of time.
  17. Hi lads was out a few weeks ago on our last day of the season, as we approach the top of a hill we ferreting the dogs marked a burrow and we claimed two rabbits . Down the hill we toddled and a thought past my mind that never crossed it in all my outings over the yrs. This hill was 700-800 feet aprrox above sea level, my question been how high up can are little friends live. interesting to here your replies .
  18. Sad to see one of our own go like that. RIP Tony..
  19. Camera on the collar would be great, see all the action plus less digging as you know when the rabbit is completely dead.
  20. Bring her out on her own and keep her leashed, if you see a rabbit out, let her hunt it to the burrow. As soon as she shows interest in the hole, in with the ferret but dont net up, let the rabbit bolt this will create great excitement for her. Repeat this several times and she soon relate { hole---excitement]. Dont make the mistake of bushing young terriers if you want them to be top class markers.
  21. Its the veg plot for me, looking forward to it.
  22. Im sure joe she everything you say she is, a smashing looking bitch she is, and the big advantage with the lurcher over the terrier they will catch rabbit in the open ground. my terriers are no more than 13 inches to the shoulder making them more nippy around the warren on tight hedges . This is in my opinion the advantage the terrier has over the lurcher, more versatile mopping up on each side of tight hedges. I expect they are pretty quick on a warren in a tight hedge, but what do the rabbits look like after they dog have 'Mopped' them up? depends on the strain of terrier some more soft
