V-Mach Kit Installed
Coypu Hunter replied to Coypu Hunter's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Well, the HW97's actually a FAC rifle, since it was supposed to be 21 joules/15.5 fpe when I bought it before the law changed... I have a gun licence and various firearms, as you can see from my signature, so it's not a problem. Nice for new shooters though, who can buy an air rifle with decent power for target shooting (or even vermin control, if they're very, very naughty ). -
V-Mach Kit Installed

They upped the unlicensed limit to 20 joules last September (15fpe) from 10 joules (7.5 fpe). So, you can now legally own an air rifle capable of taking down most vermin without a licence, but you can't use it... Makes a lot of sense! -
V-Mach Kit Installed

Treecreeper, according to the law, you can't hunt or control vermin with air rifles in France, no matter what power they are. So when I get rats in my chicken shed, I'm supposed to go in there with my .410 or my .22 rimfire and take care of them that way. Like that's gonna happen! Let's just say that laws made in Paris tend to be ignored by the people who actually have to live in the countryside... Rez, what power output did the V-Mach give you in your 97 and 98? -
Well, the FAC V-Mach kit for my HW97K arrived today, and is already in the rifle.I bet quite a few people are running around shooting rather hot HW97Ks if they've installed a V-Mach kit!!! I just used the two pre-compression washers recommended in the installation instructions, and left out the nylon guide rod spacer and four extra washers... lucky I did! The first three sets of results are from 30X Weihrauch F&T Specials, 8.7 grains. The last line is for 10X H&N FTTs in 4.50, 8.64 grains, cos I've just exhausted my supply of the Weihrauchs. The rifle is now zeroed with FTTs at 33 ya

Good session! I agree, paulk. Every other forum I'm on allows you to upload direct from your computer, phone, whatever. If I didn't have my own website, I wouldn't be able to upload pics here. Stoopid.

Good result. I'm liking the Ronnie Barker specs -- are they originals from the 1970s?

I know what you mean. I have a Still silencer (French brand) which is around the same diameter as the 97 silencer, and the adapter is also about the same diameter, so they don't look too bad together. Yours is a bit smart-looking, though, looks like it was supplied with the gun. Dare I ask how much it cost?
-
Looks well made, and a good job on matching the dimensions of the 97's own "silencer". Is it properly baffled and made to be taken apart and cleaned, or just a tube stuffed full of wire wool? I use a Best Fittings silencer adapter, they're not too stupidly ugly.

What did you pick the remains up with? A shovel?

Lee makes good products, you should be OK with them. A good manual is essential for safety reasons, general information and tips, not just specifically for Hornet reloading. PM me your email address and I'll send you a PDF of "The ABCs of Reloading". I would strongly recommend you read the general sections BEFORE you start reloading!

Bought my hardly-used Hornady 5-station press second hand for 100€ (600€ new). The better ones tend to be built to last, so if I were you I'd look around for second-hand as others have said.

Thanks for that, O wise one! V-Mach kit's on the way, and should be here & fitted by the weekend.

OK, couple of tetchnikal questions for you, since you seem to spend most days with your head stuck inside a Weihrauch with a V-Mach kit in your hand! Firstly, the V-Mach fitting instructions say that you should install the piston sleeve "with the open section opposite to the slot in the piston". Now, this can mean two things. Either you install it with the two slots in line, so you can still see the spring through the slot in the piston. Or, you install the sleeve with its open section at the far side of the piston, so when you look into the slot in the piston, all you can see is the pist

Oh yes I do. It's a FAC 97K, and I have a French gun licence. If you look at my signature, you'll see that it covers a multitude of sins...
-
I'll see if it fits well when it gets here later this week. The tighter the better, as the Bishop said... The pivot pin, like the trigger unit pins, is tapered, which might explain the problem. I stick a thin screwdriver through the holes to align them, then push the screwdriver out with the pin itself.

I was talking about the need to size the piston seal that you mentioned, rather than managing the power output. Is the piston seal normally a bit over-sized to accommodate any variations in the piston chamber's internal diameter?
-
Do they make them a little oversize or something, to allow for variations in the size of the compression chamber?
-
Yup, I've spent too much time recently inside my 97K rather than shooting it, and a V-Mach kit will arrive next week... Mind you, it's still knocking down magpies despite having to replace the spring, so I'm reasonably happy, and still shooting! Don't know if I'd have the patience to do what you've done, a V-Mach kit will do for me.

That's dedication for you... Well done, mate -- a great result after all your hard work. Now stop fiddling with the bleedy thing and go and shoot it, you saddo!
-
Yep, legally speaking. So I'm supposed to use my shotgun or 22LR inside the chicken shed to blast rats. Yeah, right, like that's ever gonna happen! See what I mean about laws made in Paris being ignored? Here's another one, just shot a few minutes ago while trying to nick a fatball on the birdfeeder. Quite pleased with this one. Standing unsupported (although leaning my left shoulder against the tumble drier inside the utility room) at 32 yards. Heart & lung shot, dropped like a brick. Unfortunately, his mate didn't stick around to investigate. Maybe later...

Cheers. Hunting and pest control with air rifles are illegal in France, even though you can buy an air rifle of up to 15 fpe muzzle energy without a licence. However, since the laws are made in Paris by townies who don't understand countryside issues, most people around here ignore the law and use air rifles to keep the vermin down. So, while you might speculate that magpies 1 & 4 were shot with an HW97K putting out Weihrauch F&T Special 8.7-grain domed pellets at 11.8 fpe, and that magpies 2 & 3 were shot with a 22LR using Winchester Long Z low-velocity 29-grain .22 Long

Keep it up! The beggars seem to have bred like flies here in Brittany this year, so I'm thinning them out too. The last one got stuck up the tree where I shot it, so had to wait for it to rot a bit before it fell out.

It's called "marketing".
