  1. do some research is a most there plenty online or a load of books that give advise on everything from keeping them and working them, just because you have a ferret doesnt mean you can go out rabbiting, there alot of work that needs doing before hand, making sure its tame and well handle is one of the most important things wait a few months till you get a ferret just because you want a young ferret so you can start from scratch with it all the ones about now are about a year old and over. you can get a ferret fairly easy at game fairs and putting the word about and pets4homes iv had afew lit
  2. iv bolted little owls, cats, iv had pheasants sat in one holers before but not right in just few inches most be to keep out of bad weather
  3. i usually go by months with an R in.... but all depends on if its for sport or pest control and weather there are young rabbits about, i tend not to ferret if i know there are young about just to save my self from digging like a mad man all over the place lol
  4. had mine get out a few times, iv trained mine to the whistle so sometimes i call and they turn up but iv had it in the past were iv found all but one and they have been gone for a few days and then turn up when it suits them, i find setting traps its the best way and just letting the neighbours know there missing, having a look about with the lamp and also check around the cage at night iv had it when mine have gone missing they been tryin to get back in hope they turn up
  5. last year on my permissions i could go out for for the day and could pull 30 if worked hard enough for it and was out most weekends as well as lamping during the week, this year iv maybe been out 6 times, only really had sport for the lurcher during the day but not enough to talk about, its a real bad state even after leaving a good stock last year the weathers just had its way with them
  6. thanks lads, they arrived this morning and i took dogs out for abit of rabbiting on some rough wet ground to test them out and they seem great, solid pair of pants id highly recommend them
  7. mine havnt started yet touch wood its always a nightmare when mine are in for the first few weeks or until they line a jill
  8. my mate has 2 solid staffs they can bo abit funny with other dogs but has come out with my pack of ferrets and hounds afew times, the only thing is if its good with the ferrets, worst case is if it gives one a shake. had afew close calls me self
  9. 5 hundred for a terrier pup is ridicules for that price it should be able to fly, i bought my border/lakey off a mate and i knew its parents very well seen them work 100 times and knew there family history and payed 150 and felt abit robbed lol there will be lads on here that will sell them for cheap or theres pets4homes all depends on what breed ya after
  10. there was a staff near mine that attacked a few dogs nearly killed a yorkshire terrier and done some damage to afew other dogs they tried asking for vets bills seen as though it was his dogs fault and he just gave them aloud of grief and threatened them, it tried to attack my springer bitch when i was my local wood she was heavily pregnant and i went total APE there was a few people that witnessed it and was trying to pull it back but my 2 other dogs my borderlakey and lurcher heard the noise and piled into the staff and gave it a absolute hiding, my terrier whos a seasoned foxing dog wen

  12. thanks pistolpete, been waiting what seems a life time for them now they was a mix up with my order i would have had them 2 days ago but now i have to wait abit longer lol im looking forward to trying them out after hearing good things about them
  13. iv seen staff/patts work on fox but not border id imagine it would be similar, but sounds a good mix id have thought it wouldnt be as head strong as the patt crosses

  15. when i got my first ferret about 5 years ago the bloke i got him from said i should feed him nothing but milk, bread and rabbit, when i asked him about complete he said its bad for them its hard to believe that people still think like that. i didnt listen a single word he said lol still got the old boy now hes still giving rabbits hell if i had listened to that horrible advise i know he wouldnt have lastest long
  16. when i give mine meat from butcher i cut it up only because if its in one big piece they will battle over it lol but with game i stick the whole thing in and let them do there thing

  18. during the winter i feed them mostly flesh rabbit, pigeon, crow, magpies, and i get all the left overs my butcher was goin to throw out. in summer i give them complete with a little bit of meat just to make sure they get some protein and calories if im working them.
  19. i got a saluki/grey/whip with a dash of bull in him somewhere he has stamina he has the drive, has enough brains to do what ever i want him to hes not hard mouthed retrieves live game to hand, he knows what to kill and what not to kill
  20. with spaniels it shouldnt matter what strain it is as long as its from working stock it will do anything ya want it to, as long as its trained to some kind of standard ether breeds will do the same job in terms of hunting styles, they both can be wild when working lol, its not about them being trained up to the giles like ones the field trail dogs, i like a dog that will hunt off its own back not because its been told to. with price i just had a litter and sold them for 300 with microchip tail dock worming, i wouldnt pay more than that even if there KC reg,
  21. i have 2 springers, i also have a saluki/grey/whip i use my springer bitch to flush rabbits for my lurcher every other day, spingers are jack of all trades in my opinion, mine are not full time rabbiting dogs i have them sat in a hide on pigeon, crow and wildfowl, in the beating line and for picking up on shoots. in terms of what would work for you, i use my spinger bitch to flush on similar ground for the same thing just for mooches after work and she works fantastic they have a great noes and will crash through the roughest cover without thinking and when trained right you will have gre
  22. with the lack of rabbits across the board i was wondering what everyone's seeing in terms of predators... foxes, stoats, raptors etc, is the this missing food source effecting were they are moving to and whether they are changing their habits. is it just the rabbit population on the decrease? i know game birds have had a hard time.
  23. a mate of mine has just got rid of his 5 ferrets all of his permission has gone dead got hit by mixi then all the bad weather its killed everything, poor lad i was absolutely jealous of his permission past few years, now im just glad that i can go out and still see the few rabbits about on my permission
