  1. Thats good advice but it depends on the dog some are born to hunt and very hot, these need little encouragement and need reining in.
  2. Ive got the chance to have a go at some boar near to me and was thinking of getting rid of the 243 and using a 6.5x55 for deer and boar.Whats the heavyest round you can use,is it 165grain?
  3. I have just got my first load of this years wheat, and it looks very poor .The grains are all shriveled up and generally small.I have been talking to a couple of lads up and down the country and it looks like we are in the same boat.Talking to the contractor and he tells me that all his milling wheat is going to animal feed, its been a bad year.
  4. Oh dear ratattack, you are in danger of doing an Anne Robinson!!!!
  5. Sounds like you have the basis for a good dog. What i would do is get him to have a few chases on a rabbit .If you know a dog trainer with a rabbit pen Great if not, perhaps you could find some rushes or tuffted grass where you could have some flushes.I know it might go against the grain to lose some of the control you have instilled in the dog,but this will hot him up ,and it wont be too difficult to bring him back in line.
  6. I have had my 243 for about the same time and use 100grain for deer with acceptable meat damage,i also used to use 75grain bergers for foxes but this meant re -zeroing ,I now have a 223 for foxes and love the 55grain sako or normas,i tried home loads but havent been able to improve on them signifigantly.I have heard great things about the 6.5x55 and i think it could well replace my 243 in the future.
  7. I always used to dose my birds with Solulites and Baycox when i put my birds to wood because of the stress of wing clipping ,debitting ,crating up,and transporting.I now have Avatec in my pellets and have not had a problem.......yet. solulite has been recognised to affect baycox because of conflicting PH levels Baycox being a strong alkali and solulite being acidic the mix causes the Baycox to fall out of suspension Bayer now recommend that Baycox is used without any addition Cheers danw, didnt know that, you learn something new everyday!I havent used baycox on my birds that have gone
  8. I think you are refering to emtryl, which is a suspected carcinogen, which has a withdrawal period ,people did not follow the guidelines, and treated birds entered the food chain.I cant see that happening with Baycox!
  9. In that case you will have to do what i do ,take off all your clothes run around the pen a few times singing at the top of your voice ,then drop to your knees ,hold your head in your hands and sob uncontrolably, repeating "why me you b*****ds,why me".The Buzzards felt so sorry for me they f--ked off to my neighbours shoot!!!!!

  11. I know what you are saying Darren, and i agree to a certain extent,If meat damage is not a problem its ok.But what about a game dealer who insists on neck or head shots and penalises you for a damaged carcass?????I know that animal welfair comes first, but if i am in a high seat and set up for a shot i feel confident with a neck shot at a reasonable range, and the advantage is they drop on the spot.Just my opinion. Hi fella my comment is not critisism as such I too have taken neck shots but not very often, and I know game dealers can be funny, Hi Darren ,I use a 243 for my stalking,I was just s

  13. Look on ebay and find the galvanised sections you are after, then put a concrete base down, and get someone to make a block housing with a felt roof.Depends on if you have some handy mates!!!If you do you wont be far off budget. Also sort out drainage for when you wash down,no solids just water !!!! Do this and you will stay on good terms with the neighbours!!!!
  14. I have guys come to me from wales for stalking, and they tell me there are very few deer of any kind in south Wales.Even the rabbits wear helmets is what they say.As a nation the welsh are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable hunters and dog men i have come across ,but there is an element of lawless individuals who have ruined the deer population through unsustainable pressure.
  15. Nice wood on that rifle!!Whats the make and scope ???
  16. Thats what I intened messing about with with the 222 I just picked up. Sako 55`s. If they work out on roe for, me then the 243 is getting sold. Or swapped for a scope. I am in England and so i couldent say from experience but i hear from north of the border that they are fine . Sako 55s in 223 are mustard for foxes and really knock them about .So if i were up north i would take a neck or a head shot if the range was not too great, but expect a bit of damage if you go for the boiler room!!!!!
  17. You are in scotland right?????? 223 a superb flat shooting round that is ballisticly perfect.Sako 55grn soft point ,PERFECT!!!!!
  18. This is why i like this forum , you get a balanced feedback ,i like a cz the seeker likes a 10/22 ultimately you have to make your own mind up!!!!!!!!
  19. I agree with you 100% I started off with an air rifle as a kid and learnt a lot of field craft, but a shotgun opened up a lot of oportunities at moving targets,on the wing or on the ground,in short if you have to have one ,get a shotgun ,you will have more fun !!!!!!
  20. Go for a brno -cz you will not regret it .You get a lot of bang for your bucks!!!Accurate, hard wearing,What more do you want.Put at Hawk 3-9x40 scope on it or simmons white tail classic,a great combo .
  21. The reason that i treat my birds like this is that i order all my food before i take delivery of my birds.By having it in one delivery reduces cost,Ive got it so i use it ,I have had birds in these pens for years and treated them like this and never heard a snick. Hey i'm not knocking you mate......that old saying if its not broke dont fix it.. What i was getting at is everyone seems to worry about gapes and its easily treatable. I mean you dont go and buy bottles of medicine and bang them in the water just for the hell of it, thats because everything is that dam expensive. I will say whet
  22. I saw the fox and badger badges and it made me puke!!!!What made me laugh was his best mate Roger Taylor on drums ,That guy along with Mark Knofler, Eric Clapton,Jackie Stewart and others,Used to shoot large bags of pheasants at a neighbouring shoot a few years ago.It seems May isnt too bothered about the company he keeps, but then money talks......

  24. With all this wet weather we have had i would not be too suprised to see birds arrive off the rearing field with gapes, also its quite late in the season to put birds t o wood so you have probably had the second batch through the huts.I get my birds at about seven weeks weather permitting, and they go on 23%early growers, then at 9weeks they go on growers with FLUBENVET for a week or so then back to growers then at twelve weeks they go back on FLUBENVET before going on to wheat.
  25. Sorry not much of a photographer.Check out a Paul French video of the cocker championship to see what these little dogs are capable of.Dont get me wrong nobody has a higher regard for terriers and lurchers than me but its horses for courses. ATB SL
