  1. Not if you don't breathe on it or get moisture near it!
  2. Yes, CA glue, polyurethane, laquer or a hard wax oil will do the job fine.
  3. Tru oil won't really get the dark effect you are hoping for I don't think, it will help bring the grain out and add a nice surface finish though. For catapults you want something that's a bit more harder wearing I think. To get it darker I would use a wood stain, you might have some knocking around? The sort of stuff you use on a garden fence should do the job. Here's a link to an instructional video Nathan Masters has done on how to apply a CA finish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8_ulK-w7KE
  4. Natural latex is great, however it's not cheap in the UK as it has to be imported from the states. The difference is only marginal and to most people un-noticeable when shooting.
  5. Great first attempt! It looks like pine to me, I wouldn't recommend using pine for catapults as it's a softwood. If you want to get a darker colour you could try teak oil or a wood stain. For a glass like finish the best I've seen is Tru-Oil used for gunstocks but it's not very hard wearing. CA glue finishes are much harder wearing however they take a bit of practice to get right, but will leave a lovely shiny finish. Personally I prefer hard wax oil but it's not cheap and again not the easiest to apply.
  6. It depends on whether you prefer a hammer grip style or a board cut style pal? I used to shoot a black widow type when I was a kid but found the brace cumbersome and uncomfortable so I designed a hammer grip catapult that has canted forks which eliminates the need for a wrist brace. A short explanation of it can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGh-SDV10cs
  7. Pre-tensioning band sets will ensure a greater band life, and also help in greater accuracy providing both bands have the same tension. There are a number of threads about the importances of pre-tensioning on the SSF, here is a recent one on the effects of uneven band length: http://slingshotforum.com/topic/24675-the-effects-of-uneven-band-length/?hl=tension
  8. Make sure the oak is of good quality, I'd recommend cross laminating it to be safe.
  9. I'm in need of some quick dosh for something I've seen on ebay, If anyone fancies this for half price drop me a PM.
  10. Essential for anyone wanting to do the BPCA Level 2 Award In Pest Management. £75.
  11. Lee Precision moulds are the best I've found.
  12. Amazon is good for TBG, like Mick says Roo leather is by far the best pouch material to use imo.
  13. Tapering increases speed, the more extreme the taper the faster the projectile speed but the shorter the lifespan of the bands will be. A 5mm taper will only make a small amount of difference to band longevity but it will increase the speed of the projectile quite a fair amount.
  14. Catapults are very much a personal thing, what some people find suits them may not suit others. It's just a case of finding the right one for you, a bit like guns The type of bands/tubes and taper to use are dependent on what you are going to be shooting, for hunting with 12mm lead I'd recommend Theraband Gold tapered at 20-15mm. Hope this helps a bit.
  15. Theoben all day long, more reliable and they can easily be worked on unlike Daystates.
  16. Excellent first attempt! We have a vacancy going if you are interested?
  17. 'OTT' or 'over the top' is when the bands are attached horizontally to the forks, 'TTF' or 'through the forks' is when they are attached vertically. Hope that helps
  18. I haven't posted anything for a while, so here's a few of mine
  19. I can make you something similar to that no problem.
  20. 18mm is fine, I would recommend Titebond 2 as being the best glue I have found for wood.
