  1. I have a couple of breeds that have gone out on the grass for the first time today, Wessex Supreme and Farm Ranger both fast growing broiler type but well able to free range. Supposed to reach around 7 lb mark in about 12 weeks with the Farm ranger taking a few weeks longer. First time rearing meat birds for me but when looking into types to try these where reccomended as good tasting, free rangers. I will know by the end of July if they taste good, they have done fine over the last five weeks and are growing well. Got them from C and B poultry in Galway and they delivered them at a few days
  2. Haven't really seen any details about this case but the police always seem to put the people they suspect in front of the media. Do they do it to gather evidence or just to watch and analyse how they react in front of the cameras. If they where in some way involved in the deaths of their children I don't think the UK having the death penalty would have deterred them. People have always commited and will always commit unbelievable crimes against their fellow man, including their own families, death penalties will not stop this but I suppose does go some way to avenge the crimes for those w
  3. More details http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0528/1224316807694.html Mr Jones, who works as a freelance photographer with the British angling magazine Trout Fisherman, was trolling using a “roach deadbait” when he hooked the fish. “When I hooked it first, I knew instantly it was big fish. It was like hooking a car, the line just streamed off the reel.” “Using this type of big bait, you're either going to get nothing or a big fish.” The 46-year-old, from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, played the fish for over an hour before he managed to land it.
  4. Why not? The angler who catches it makes the choice and shouldn't be made to feel guilty by others into returning fish out of sentiment just because it has avoided a net or hook longer than most. I would be more concerned about anglers that bag up every session with young healthy fish than the loss of one older one. The impact on the breeding population is huge from these "fishmongers" unlike the angler that takes one large specimen.
  5. I use a blood knot to join the leader and tippet. http://www.animatedknots.com/bloodknot/index.php?Categ=fishing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
  6. It is a real trial and error thing in getting the right tippet to get a good turnover, concentrate less on breaking strain and more on the diameter of the line and how supple or stiff it is. I use cheap 5x nylon leaders (snowbee) and add about 3 to 4 feet of a good tippet material. I use Orvis or Rio tippet which I find is supple and sinks well when degreased, expensive to buy but it's the last bit of line between you and the fish so it's worth it and it usually lasts a season. The whole setup can be unbalanced if you use a fly that is too heavy or too light so you still may end up with tangles
  7. Thanks, I thought I was probably worrying about nothing, seems happy enough herself, eating, drinking, and feeding the kits.
  8. My jill had her litter last night judging from the squeaks coming from her nest box this morning, not going to look in for a while yet though. I had a good look at her when she came out for food and water and she still looks really big, not as tight as a drum as she was yesterday but still looks as if she is pregnant. Is this normal?
  9. Really difficult to find a vet down here in Cork who has done a vasectomy on a ferret, managed to find one that is "willing" to have a go at my hob but reckons the price will be around 150 to 200 Euro. Which seems expensive to say the least, rip off Ireland strikes again.
  10. I made some nettle beer a while back and the stink when boiling up the nettles filled the house, I was not very popular. When it was fermenting for a week the smell wasn't much better. The finished product was different to anything tasted before but not in a good way, very earthy and if you could imagine the water from your boiled veg with fizz and alcohol then that's it. Nice looking pint with a good head though but I don't thik I'll bother again. This the remains of the nettles after boiling and I thought it tasted like spinach but less tender.
  11. Chickens can be awkward buggers sometimes and go off laying or do random size/soft eggs for no apparent reason. Moulting at this time of year does make them lay less but soft shells may be a sign of something lacking in their diet, do you give them crushed oyster shell as this gives them a calcium boost. Have you checked for mites? If they are being sucked dry of blood every night in the coop they tend to go off laying as well. Are their combs and wattles nice bright red or do they look dark and lacking blood? The wet weather shouldn't be a problem as long as they have some shelter and are
  12. Well it's not a rabbit dragging it down the hole so I reckon he is hanging around for the easy food and a lie in. Might be worth borrowing a cage trap and baiting it with some fresh meat.
  13. He also admitted that he hasn't sent the gun so he won't have a receipt.
  14. The UK has welcomed people from other countries for the benefit of the country as most work in jobs that couldn't be filled by it's own population. From the 1950's to present day immigration has helped run the UK. UK pensioners are well looked after if you compare them to most of the rest of Europe and compared to many parts of the world, where if your family doesn't look after you in old age the state certainly will not. The UK armed forces get well paid and enjoy a generous pension entitlement, nobody is forced to join and most of them love what they do. As for bailing out the r
  15. Born and lived in the UK for most of my life and have lived in the South West of Ireland for a good few years now so I can compare the two. Good points about the UK are the excellent free at the point of use Health service, paying €50 to see a GP in Ireland really does question whether you really feel that ill. Good roads and public transport in the UK, they are better here now than a few years ago but getting around can be an adventure sometimes. I love Ireland because the country is basically uninhabited once you leave the city or town, I can fish for wild trout in the river and wander
  16. It's a very drastic way of gutting, looks really efficient but I think I'll stick to a sharp knife and a shake.
  17. It really annoys the wife when you give her back the stockings after your ratting session though.
  18. The lad I got them off said they where unrelated, I know thats no guarantee but I what could I do? The hob is a big fella and dosen't really look like the albino jill but if a litter of six legged mutants are born I'll let you know.
  19. I have been on the look out for a hob over the last few weeks so I can get him vasectomised to bring the jills that I have out of season. One came up on a Done Deal advert so after a quick phone call a meet was arranged. I was a bit wary about this ferrets temperament as in the advert picture the owner was wearing long leather gauntlets to handle him and the jilll he also had for sale. At the meet the owner put on his gloves and opened up the box very cautiously and grabbed a nice looking hob about year old, he said he was a bit bitey but I looked him over and after handling him myself I decid
  20. They listen in to all your phone calls too, I always wear a tin foil hat before using my mobile phone or laptop .
  21. Why did you apply the anti parasite stuff if you suspect he may have a problem with a cold or some sort of ear, nose infection? The crusting on the face must be from some nasal or eye discharge that is dried and gone crusty so I would suspect some sort of infection, probably a job for a vet if you are really worried.
  22. Springer pup was stung in the mouth a while ago, whole head swelled to twice the normal size, she looked like some sort of mutant. Took her to the vets as I was worried about her breathing being restricted. They gave her an anti hystamine injection and the swelling started to reduce imediately. She had swollen lips for a few days after, no problems since which is good as I have two beehives in the garden.
  23. So now you say the vehicle was confiscated for no insurance, which is not unusual. They issue 6 points plus a fine for this unless you can prove the driver had insurance at the time. You still have to pay for the recovery and storage though, so the feckers still hit you in the pocket.
  24. The powers given to police under Section 59 could be used to confiscate but they would still have to give you the reasons and appropiate documentation before they enforced it. Section 59 (1) Where a constable in uniform has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle is being used on any occasion in a manner which- (a) contravenes section 3 or 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52) (careless and inconsiderate driving and prohibition of off-road driving), and ( is causing, or is likely to cause, alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public, he shall have th
