  1. This image was put on Facebook on the Wild Derrynane page, a conservation and wildlife photography group. I don't think it was put on as ammunition for the anti's, more as an example of the crass stupidity of the hunters to leave dead foxes on the Wild Atlantic Way, Kerry, in full view of walkers and tourists. Of course this has led to some mad comments from the bunny huggers and in their eyes makes anyone involved in hunting, shooting and fieldsports as the same as the irresponsible idiots who couldn't be bothered clearing up after themselves. This is the sort of stuff that gets hunting banne
  2. They will probably licence them like they do here in Ireland, I know that will restrict all the young lads getting into shooting easily and cheaply but it does mean you are less likely to encounter knobheads shooting all the local wildlife and domestic pets. I remember as a kid in the UK many of my mates had air rifles and pistols, amazing that we all made into adulthood with two working eyes and no firearms convictions.
  3. Deepest, darkest West Cork.
  4. After thinking long and hard about whether to get another dog to replace my Border/Lakeland terrier bitch who died last year I have found a lovely whippet x collie. I do a lot more ferretting now since we moved house and have permission on my doorstep, really can't believe my luck as it starts in the field adjoining our gardens. I've been ferreting without a dog for a few months and I'm starting to have conversations with the ferrets! I was going to get another terrier as it's what I have always had but after much deliberation and plenty of research on here reading old threads on small fer
  5. That's a smart bit of kit, I have a Chillington hoe, about the same size but without the spike. Great tool for many things from earthing up potatoes to hacking roots in the ground. I reckon you could easily sell that sort of hand made tool for decent money, when you use tools a lot you really appreciate one made to last.
  6. I used the Alum/salt and water recipe to do a Sika hide given to me by my friend who shoots deer around here. It came out quite well I think, I cleaned as much flesh and membrane before it went into the mix for a couple of weeks and then scraped it again and worked it over a couple of months. The final stretching and drying was the hardest I think, to get it to stretch enough without tearing and keeping it supple enough to work. There are no bald patches and the fur is really tight on the skin, I treated it with a little neatsfoot oil when I was happy it needed no more stretching. I've a few r
  7. It's always best not to rely on one book but I think The River Cottage Handbook, Mushrooms by John Wright is good beginners book. This isn't a comprehensive guide to everything out there but he focuses on the common edibles you would probably find on a walk and the dangerous ones you could confuse them with. He has a witty style of writing so its a good read as well, with a few recipes at the back of the book. It's small enough to carry with you and the photographs/descriptions are excellent A lot of books tend to give you way too many fungi to look at and it easy to be put off but I found
  8. Didn't realise maggie sold all the council houses?Remember buying mine, but not any of the others that were on the dole buying theirs?Forgot to say this was when labour was in power. Maggie didn't sell the houses, she just instituted the "right to buy" scheme which allowed those eligible to buy, like yourself, the problem lies in not allowing councils to use the money from the sales to build more social housing. Labour continued the scheme but the Tony was a big fan of Maggie and many conservative policies were continued under new labour.
  9. Just one of the best things she did and she did many Great idea to allow councils to sell off their social housing stock but to then not allow them to use the proceeds to replace the council housing was just maggies way of destroying working class communities. She wanted the vote of everyone who bought their ex council houses at great discounts but wanted everyone else to rot.
  10. Where in the world is this nirvana/promised land where there is low taxation, well funded public services, free healthcare, free schooling and no immigrants apart from you of course.
  11. If it was brand new from ebay, as long as you have a dated proof of purchase from the ebay seller then I think Deben would honour the 12 month guarantee, presuming this was an Ebay shop. Print off your ebay invoice to send it back to Deben with all the packaging.
  12. I can't believe you have actually sent me your phone number in a private message, did you really think I was going to phone you to talk about the immigration issues in th UK or do you hand your phone number out to loads of random men throughout your day. Now I'm not going to pass judgement on your lifestyle but stay safe and always tell an adult where you are going to meet these men.
  13. So we'll agree that you're in the wrong and you'll apologise then, I'll say no more about it.
  14. So you post on a forum but don't want anyone to comment unless they agree with you and why would I want your phone number I don't want to be your friend.
  15. So you watch it to keep abreast of the housing situation,I see now, perhaps if Margaret Thatchers Conservative government hadn't allowed all the council houses to be sold and then stopped the councils from building more there would plenty of social housing for your friends and family now.
  16. Bet they can spell "benefit" and "Britain" though, why do you watch these programmes if they are going to give you an ulcer? Is the problem with your European neighbours living in your country and legally getting what they are entitled to or do you just not like people who don't talk or look like you?
  17. The problem is that the information gathered was useless or made up, so torture did not work on this occasion other than to further piss off the real terrorists who continued to plan and execute atrocities.
  18. It's always best to talk as little as possible about hunting and fieldsports when speaking to new people, I've always found like minded people will suss each other out pretty quickly but there are a lot of gentle souls out there who live in a world of fluffy bunnys and Disney characters. Just play your cards close to your chest when enquiring about a dog and you wont offend these people.
  19. You're right mate, we should all integrate, just like the protestants and catholics in Ireland, that went pretty smooth didn't it You mean Northern Ireland don't you, that part of the United Kingdom that you see on the news. Not Ireland, very little trouble between prods and catholics in the south. Perhaps the key to this is the British don't like multicuturism unless they are imposing it on someone elses country.
  20. It's old clothes in one box and shredded office paper in the other, the five ferrets seem to prefer making a nest in the big ball of paper, all curled up together at night. During the day they split up and use the old clothes box as well. I have four young sons so the wife puts all the boys old, worn out clothes in s bag and I fill up the ferret box as needed. I don't know what I'm going to do when they all leave home as I never throw any of my old clothes out.
  21. Found Sunday 31st November near Macroom in Cork, springer spaniel, looks like it may have been lost for a few days. I'm taking it to the vets today to see if its chipped. Its been posted on all the usual lost and found sites and I'll ring round all the local vets today to see if someone had reported it but if any of the Irish lads have any info please get in touch.
  22. Apple juice in a fermenting bin will probably start fermenting on its own without adding yeast. There are many strains of yeast in the air and on the apples but it can be hit and miss. If you want to be sure of a good fermentation with yeast that will survive once alcohol is being produced then it would be wise to add one made for the job. It's always fun to experiment though and some wild yeasts can give you some interesting additional flavours but it would be a shame to lose a bin of juice if it got infected.
  23. Keep it in the fridge, Pie-eater, and when you use some out of the jar pour some olive oil on the surface to stop it drying out. I think a couple of weeks would be okay but ours always gets eaten pretty quick. The last dregs out of the jar are lovely on some cheese biscuits or as a dip.
  24. There is not much to be foraged this time of year, although I have been picking Dandelions for wine making and finding the odd Morel and St George's mushroom. however the local woods are now full of Wild Garlic, its very nice finely shredded into your salad but makes a great alternative to Basil to make a pesto to have with your pasta. 1 large handful of Garlic leaves. 50g Parmesan or any other hard cheese. 50g of pine nuts or walnut, pumpkin seeds. 100ml approx of olive oil. salt, pepper, lemon juice to your taste. Wizz up the cheese in a processor first, add your nuts and garlic
