I start all mine on fox at 9 month as long as they're keen for it. I only have 5 running dogs left in my yard out of maybe 20 or more in 9 years. The dogs that stick to it after starting at that age to me seem to be the type that do fox after fox without thinking twice and that's the type of dog I want.

my pup looked the exact same at the same age. He's now 9 months I think and accidentally took his first fox on his own last night.

Edwards' Coyote Catches 2013 & 21014
Ausnick replied to Dan Edwards's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I can't anymore either Dan. It's a pain in the ass. -
Where abouts did you go fruit picking? There's hundreds of the b*****ds around here.

your bloody lucky lad what's the time frame on them things it not like 4 hours and your dead can mind one nearly nabbed me when I was jumping on a backhoe up in Queensland the boss told me if you get nabbed its a helicopter ride too hospital You'll be dead in minutes if you panic or don't apply pressure above the bite properly I always got told. I know of a lot of dogs that have died from snakes and we come across them most hunts if it's a little sunny.

are the brown one of the worse for biting people out there, are they big snake.? I swear they had one in steve /crock hunter house once ,and it nearly got his face lol, he was feckin nutter lolFrom my experience I think the browns stay low or flee so you have to tread on them go get bitten. They grow to a couple metres long and they're highly venomous but they have really short fangs so less likely to get deep enough. Then there's tiger snakes and rather than getting really long they just get really thick and they get really aggressive. We ran over one on one of our lanes the other day and

I got bitten by a brown snake and it was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. I was lucky it never got in my blood stream or else I would've been dead before I knew it. I can't stand snakes now, I always used to sneak up on them and tease them, now I won't go near them unless a dog is getting bitten. Horrible things they are.

I dunno about ferreting; what I do know is if a dog runs straight at a fox when it's heading straight for cover, it'll catch less than the dog that cuts the fox off from the cover and pushes it into the open.

Edwards' Coyote Catches 2013 & 21014
Ausnick replied to Dan Edwards's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
You need salukis, I'm sure they'd do a good job of catching up to the coyote over a long distance and not pulling it up at all. -
and that's how its done keep ya distance from the dogs and slow down when the dog goes out I ran over a dog last October so I don't risk it at all, it was it's first hunt and last hunt

I do very similar but do it down the lane way on my farm http://youtu.be/33y7_GEgm2Y

Sad Loss For Me... R.i.p 'pickle'
Ausnick replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I can tell you now I've killed many dogs that have come on my land, it's legal and it's for the sake of our livelihood. Farming isn't just a hobby like "poaching" is. It really disgusts me how some folk on here openly talk about poaching and making farmers lives harder than it already is. Any kind of stress to stock effects the farmers or stock owners income. I'm sure if someone came in with their animal potentially taking thousands of dollars out of your pocket you'd shoot it. -

If you didn't have permission to be on that land, that's poaching. Lurchers die in action, if she died from getting ripped open by one of his barbed wire fences would you go around cutting down 6 or 7 lines of his fences? Anyway sorry for your loss of Pickle mate. -

If you or your mate didn't poach you wouldn't have lost your dog. Farmers have it tough enough without you killing their stock. You're a complete tool. -

There's no "lines" of working ridgebacks in my country that I know of is what I'm saying. -

your not on this side of the pond mate, im sure some of the ridgebacks over your way are from working stock. we on the other hand havent had the oppertunity to utilise the breed for what they were intended for many moons now!! secondly how much of there positive attributes are directly from the ridgeback? im asking that as curiosity. The ridgebacks here are no different to yours haha. Just some people get them from show stock and if they work they work. If they don't, they get dealt with. The ridgebacks definitely add an incredible precise nose that's for sure. Tough skin is another thing. I -

The dogs I have here with ridgeback in them have incredible noses, tough skin, tough feet and can kill fighting game all night long... -
I spotlight the crap out of them, good for a bit of dog meat and they're not a guaranteed thing under the light, might be different here though because we don't have anything for them to bounce off

Starting From Scratch With No Foundation Coursing Stock
Ausnick replied to Silversnake's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I hunt paddocks from 10 acres up to a thousand acres This clip was from two dogs that I had never ran on day time hares before, they were bred for big game and the brown bitch that's falling behind had been chasing it for over a minute before I started videoing. It was their first hunt from having a 2 month break as the brown bitch broke her leg and the black dog had a severely broken toe -

The average staghound will kill at 12 months mate. I've got one 11 months old doing the job now. -

How long do they take to start on fox though? Generally people over here want their dogs killing foxes on their own by 12 months old. I've hunted with one saluki deerhound x and it was a quick bugger! But almost died on that hunt from loss of blood from our quarry we have over here. There's not really any serious hunters over here that are serious about chasing hares. I get them for dog food and pest control pretty much. We spotlight the crap out of them and bump into them when the dogs are loose when hunting other game in the day. Some times we'll slip two dogs on one to see whic -

The problem with the salukis is they don't have tough enough skin for the unique quarry over here and they're not renowned for being hard so they don't suit the fox hunters either. Send me a message mate I have videos on YouTube of my dogs catching hares. Organised coursing is illegal over here but hunting hares with dogs is completely legal.
