  1. Some excellent advice, although im not so sure about a game of tug with a spaniel.
  2. collect old xmas trees next Jan people are only too pleased to get rid pile up them up here and there they make great cover
  3. Spent the day up at High Borrans, had my two out but i cant photograph and chase them simultaneously anyway snapped a few of my mates dogs. wee Bert the cocker pup; sam a young ESS dog, dotty a wee bitch and Tula his old wildfowler, rough shooter spaniel. and this being Cumbria.............yes it rained :brr:
  4. The deregulation that began during the Thatcherite period is what enabled the Bankers to do so.. She never lost an election true, she was knifed and booted out before she got the opportunity too....how different would she have been perceived if shed remained leader and lost that election.
  5. was just going to recommend Darren, excellent trainer
  6. a springer will work on the marsh, ive seen plenty on there, but a lab will do it better; a lab can work cover but similarly a spaniel will do it better. obviously there'll be good labs that will be better than poor spaniel and vice versa, but if your looking at averages best to stick to whatever you fancy and then live with it,,,or as has been suggested...get one of each, i did
  7. thats it, recommendation for a sling for my Baikal, swivels already attached just looking for a good sling, the two that were bought for my birthday [original plus replacement] from the local shop by the missus wouldnt fit. Any suggestions advice appreciated cheers.
  8. Think its been asked before, but anyone know of any copies of this available. cheers
  9. had both my spaniels hung up on double strand wire, not a pleasant thing dog squealing and dangling upside down, both times i was close enough to get in take the weight [cocker and a very small ESS, thank feck the labs never done it] and get them sorted. not something i'm keen to experience again! mine will jump for fun, im usually shooting over them so i can choose how and when i send them, plus its mostly over walls so i'm lucky. barbed wire nasty stuff best avoided if you can...not always possible but best to take a few precautions..risk assessment, why send it over the wire for a stone
  10. impressed with the woodcock, ive noticed a lot of young dogs [a few older ones for that matter] will blank on woodcock and snipe, i'm always delighted when my young uns take to them. lovely looking dog, if circumstances were different i'd be sorely tempted by a vizla but for now i'll stick with my "dinky cockers"
  11. cracking photos, nice to see, my pup carries her blood thru Argyll Warrior, his dams sire. nice to see the old girl tempted me to dig this out in the morning
  12. had the cocker out on the fells for the first time yesterday, no flushes unless you count the snipe coming off the bog but still pleased with his progress responded well to the whistle and didnt stray too far. two blind retrieves, a nice rabbit to start with and then a snipe later on which i was well chuffed with, both nicely to hand! next season is going to be great using the cocker in the morning meant the ESS didnt tire and was able to maintain her speed and drive throughout after lunch, the little bitch only works flat out a pocket rocket but this tends to tire her on a full day so th
  13. keep plugging away, im losing the sight in my right eye so am having to learn to adapt, its a bugger but i just keep plugging away. find what works and stick with it.
  14. question wasnt aimed at you mate, each to their own. just seemed odd that somebody wanted a cocker to be like a terrier so it seemed an obvious question to ask and so i did. the answer seemed reasonable enough, as i say each to their own.
  15. no its not Morcambe, only six years there last i heard, its a small jog further south on the Wyre, the marsh is just across the road from those fields. long long waiting lists to get on anywhere round here Southport, up thru Preston, Lytham etc up to MBWA, i'm lucky i got on with the WWA in Cumbria, but a marsh closer than an 60+ minutes drive away would be nice, especially since i live 15 minutes drive from quite a few (
  16. got a bit distracted dog training yesterday, put the dogs away and grabbed the camera. 10 minute drive from home.................................25yr waiting list to join the adjoining marsh. should be sorted by the time i retire!!!
  17. cheers had them both out on a bit of cold game today, another wet day rough shooting in the fells yesterday lol
  18. very true my ESS would thrash a bowling green if asked with as much pace and drive as if she were in a covert, whereas my cocker only really becomes alive on scent
  19. there is a lad in my wildfowling club who works a couple, ive seen them at the clubs working test and they do very well for him up against an army of black labs.
  20. have you tried him with a rabbit skin dummy, my spaniels find them irresistible and never tire of retrieving or hunting for them. varying the type of retrieves sending him for memory retrieves or blinds, chucking it into cover so he has to hunt for it or leave him off retrieves for a while just focus on his quartering then after a few days drop him the odd one into your session might spark him up. hope some of this is useful.
  21. i stick with dummies or tennis balls first off, then move up to feathers strapped to a dummy and rabbit skins, then i'll drop cold game a rabbit or a bird, hen pheasant partridge, i'll also try to use snipe and woodcock if there's any, finally a cock bird or a mallard, then move on to birds shot, only sending out for the odd one and being sure its dead no runners or flappers. i find the spaniel can get a little bored of canvas if i stop using them so i mix and match the previous stage with the newer one as i move along, my lab doesnt seem to care and is as enthusiastic to pick up a canvas
