  1. had my two out training this morning, now the ESS is out of season can box them up together, interesting comparing the cocker with a pringer. she's got 12 months on the wee lad. had him out taking a line on rabbits and a bit of cold game. her ive been sharpening her pattern and getting the stop back in, went a bit wobbly after the move, but she'll be right in a week. good morning bothe did ok, chuffed. cant wait until next season to get them both out, altho he may debut Jan, dependent on progress, after his visit to the rabbit pen next month. she'll be out week on Monday, for the first timer
  2. i'd say you have to go a bit easier on a cocker, otherwise they get sulky.
  3. have you tried West Lancs gundog club they might be able to help you out. based near Ormskirk.
  4. i heard they're are a lot trickier to train than a lab
  5. springer is probably a touch easier to train than a cocker, a well bred pup thats trained correctly shouldnt let you down so long as you stick by your training, i agree the Lisett DVD is great. as far buying a trained up dog, often these are dogs that triallers have kept on until 6-9-12 months and then decided they are just not going to make the grade..they lack style, are not fast enough, just lack something the trial bloke is looking for. these dogs will make great shooting dogs they are just not cut out for trialing, not every Sunday footballer is cut out for the EPL, whichever rout
  6. i joined Nobs years ago when everything was basically free, over the years it seems to have transformed into a commercial organisation with salaried staff....payment seems to be very much to the fore with no guarantees of anything!
  7. just brought a new ESS bitch down from my mates in Cumbria, not going to make the trialing grade but a wonderful little shooting dog. she is just over two sired by FTch Buccleuch Pepper out of FTch Woodstorm Avril. Looking forward to getting her out and working, give my cocker a little breathing space to sort a few things out.
  8. always fed mine pups and dogs on Skinners
  9. indeed ive just joined the springer club, hope my cocker mates wont blackball me. my mates bitch [too small for his trialing stuff] is coming down to me.
  10. no problem retrieving from water, just ask the wildfowling lads who have ESS, theres plenty of springers retrieving geese from tidal waters so rivers stream or ponds shouldnt be a bother, if the white is an issue get a cocker or more likely a sprocker.
  11. i use Game Bore mammoths 3s or 1s 3" and 3 1/2" on the foreshore, as do a lot of the lads in the local club
  12. theres bloody lakes springing up all over the bleedin place, wish the rain would stop. saw twenty mallard afloat on the football pitch when i took the boy to school this morning
  13. after much thought i opted for the Baikal for the marsh, 3" or 3 1/2" GB mammoths and its done the job so far. have Berettas for other stuff, but for something that spends most of its time propped up in a gutter cant fault it, not pretty but bloody effective.
  14. Pilling is just up the road, the foreshore is MBWA most of the fields around there are locked down already. place is a magnet for pinks
  15. yeah get the occassional pinks, some greylag and canadas about, plus plenty of mallard, wigeon pintail goldeneye teal all found up there its decent enough just a long drive when ive two or three marshes 20 minutes from the house or less (
  16. not sure the Welsh should be giving lessons here talk about undecipherable
  17. no toby, not been able to get in anywhere local ive had to join westmorland up on the R Kent nr Arnside, hoping to maybe get an associate on MBWA if i'm lucky next year. lytham, fylde, preston, southport all full or closed the book on new members.
  18. :D its difficult to argue with that one however i still like my trips to the marsh to sit in a muddy gutter. just a shame im in such a popular area, then at least i am in a club. plenty of lads round here struggling to get in anywhere
  19. ahhhh cheers, we're a bit thick [stupid] this side of the pond cheers
  20. err might be a stupid question but what at brats? over here brats are unruly children.
  21. plenty of geese only problem is finding a club with vacancies, unless you have inland access can be tricky. day tickets often the best option
  22. i have found its mental stimulation they crave more than exercise, your routine seems fine and once you start training and get the dog thinking it'll quickly settle. my only issue with mine is he sometimes wants to play [he's just 12 months] whereas the 9 year old labs are too tired, but they soon resolve that.
  23. still looking for edward martins cocker masterclass if anyone has some
