I think it is more the owner fault than the dogs, don't get me wrong I know there are alot of badly breed litters but a hell of a lot of people I've met in the lurcher game over the years are just not capable of training a lurcher by that i mean basic commands, a good recall, the correct age of entering for the dogs capabilities, all well bred dogs with a decent owner with a good understanding of dogs should turn out, a dog needs confidence and in my opinion should never be over matched. It's even surprising how people can totally ruin a lamping dog which is basically a point and run, as I've

Two things that really annoy the feck out of me are dogs that really crunch rabbits leaving them only fit for ferret food and dogs that sniff around and then like up a bitches piss leading to its teeth chattering and it foaming at the fecking mouth!!!

You don't seem to much luck mate, a lot of the places you've been running lately have had mixie, hope it gets better for you mate

Spot on lads, good to see that there are a few bird catchers out there, but it won't please everyone, its a great trait to have in a dog, one of which I would say helps in the make up of the perfect allrounder lol

no wonder the lurcher game is the way it is

I know what you mean mate, nothing like a litter of pups to bring all the idiots and timewasters out. Had a litter of collie greyhound x saluki greyhound whippet, had idiots calling asking how much bull was in them, even had one asking if I could sell him a beddy x and could he leave his brothers gold chain as a deposit feckin idiots -
Sorry lads been feeding dogs, ferrets and hanging my pheasants. I see this thread has rattled a few people especially labtastic. Lets get a few things straight I'm not some arsehole with an unruly dog tht kills poults. Id say my dogs are trained to quite a high standard who take fur and feather REGULAR and not from around keepers pens. Personally I think a lurcher that takes fur and feather regular is priceless. Some people come across as snobs thinking birds should only be shot, this is not the point its about the intellegence of the dog not the price of a pheasant to be shot.

Brilliant.................how many birds you putting down compared to your catch rate??????...... I don't put birds down mate, its just birds that have drifted in so catch rates don't apply but she gets her fair share.

Hello folks, I was just wondering how many of you own a lurcher that takes feather and any of you consider it when purchasing or breeding a litter. Had my old bitch and her 6 month old daughter out today, the old bitch had 2 pheasant and a rabbit and the pup gripped a cock bird but didn't hold it due to its flapping,it didn't put her off as she tried for a couple more. The old bitch has also had woodcock in the lamp. Would be interested in your views, cheers for reading.

Had an old lurcher bitch years ago that would have faced Golioth but come to fireworks she would lie curled up and sleep soundly in the BATH only place she seemed to feel safe anywhere else she would pace around whining and really looking petrified

Gave my big dog a run on the lamp the other night, after a few rather long runs and at the end of the night he run his last rabbit down into the corner of the field, he started to yelp and I thought he had hung himself up on a broken fence or something. After a good inspection I came to the conclusion it must have been cramp due to the way he was holding himself, next day he was fine. He is good and fit, well hydrated (gets electrolite after vigourous exercise) and has a well balanced diet, my question is what causes cramp in this situation, I've never had this problem in other lurchers.

Story about the dog running and hiding till the landowner or stranger passes is written in A Pedigree Unknown by Phil Drabble, the other statement about the dog running off when called is also in some poaching novel. Half the folk I've met who keep lurchers struggle with the recall command let alone the above. Until I witness it o say BOLLOCKS.

Should maybe tidy that garden up abit mate don't want your misses tripping when hanging the washing out!

Feed the bitch on a good quality puppy meal, I feed my bitch on royal canine puppy, its proven to increase milk yield, pups can then be weaned onto it aswell, its a bit expensive but gives them a right good start in life.

No not been blistered yet due to skin being broken and badly swollen, back leg has been bandaged from knee down tightly to prevent any movement and keep the toe in line, return visit to vet tomorrow to see how its lookin.

While lamping on Friday night my 7 year old bitch broke her toe while running along side a stane dyke, the toe is on her back right foot and its the 2nd toe in from the outside. Had her at the vet Sat morning, vet said toe was broke close to the first joint and could probably heal well enough for the bitch to continue running, I have my own reservations about this advice but never having had this injury before I'm undecided as to have the toe off or see how it heals. Taking the bitches age into consideration I'm looking for opinions Thanks for reading

Collie whippet x mate don't think you'll go far wrong with that x, that's my type of dog ,just bred a litter along those lines myself, atb with your choice.

Was told something the same by a gardener, he said scoosh the piss patch with washing up liquid and that would prevent burning, didn't work, think he was just taking the piss!!!

Nice pups mate, but feeding the future quarry still in its jacket to pups in my opinion is wrong mate, hope it doesnt come back to bite you in the arse!

Threads like this really convince me that there is some right arseholes keeping and working lurchers who don't seem fit to keep a f*****g pet mouse. It's these kind of people that get real dog men a bad name. As for dumping game they should be f*****g ashamed, I bet the dog would like the taste of it!!
