  7. Beech n sycamore will do no harm unless they're all planted together,if they're spaced out well amongst the other species and given plenty of room they should be fine, the pheasants will love the beech mast when they start dropping
  8. Yep,all good, you might not see the benefit of beech for a long time, but the others should show results in a few years
  9. Sounds like good policy mate! I know what you mean about the dangers of losing good blood,a mate off here has found himself in that situation due to unforeseen problems and im in danger of being up the creek too if my old bitch does'nt produce me some good pups this summer. Depends wether dog can get in to get a killing hold, but there's killers and bayers in all breeds, which is'nt a bad thing cos you can suit your choice of dog to your needs,i know strains that mainly finish their fox and strains that rarely do,although you do get the exception to the rule in each strain

  19. Yeah the sooner the better mate, then you'll get some regrowth this year and you wont be disturbing poults. Its suprising how much you can get done in one day with a chainsaw,if its a small wood you can prob do it in a day.Leave the brash in piles for extra cover or flushing points n leave logs in stacks, when they start decaying they're provide loads of insects for the birds Good luck mate
  20. We have a lot of badgers round these parts, more than foxes and even more than rabbits most of the time, luckily we dont have too much trouble from them yet with disease etc but its only a matter of time i think. Also we dont have too many birds of prey except sparrowhawks, probably cos theres not many rabbits about.I do think there should be some control of both tho in areas where its needed.
  21. To create more ground cover sometimes its better to clear a ride by copicing the trees(cutting off at ground level) so the trees grow back bushier and giving more cover at ground level for maybe 10 years or so,it also lets light in giving other species a chance to get going. When this area starts getting tall again so providing more canopy cover than ground cover, copice another area,so that you've always got both canopy and ground cover, and keep rotating around the wood till you're happy with it,but dont let em get too thick.Obviously this takes years to fully acheive, but if you've got birch or
  22. Does it need more trees or more ground cover lloyd?
