I'll agree that Thatcher f****d the working man, (and not in a nice way !! LOL !!), but come on...you can't equate the 's with the 50's !!!! There was tough times after the war, but the 's there was no rationing, people wern't starving, we all poached and collected scrap, but there was no way we would go as hungry as people did in the 50's, 60's, etc !! I think you need speed for lamping right enough or a burst of it anyhow. My mate had a cracking collie cross which was the best lamping dog I ever saw. He just knew his job really well....His only fault was squatters, never seen him taking one out of the seat. He'd stalk it till he was within 3 feet and just stare till it ran which to be fair suited us. We weren't doing it for numbers but the love of the chase.

I can't see a hard up poacher buying a rifle.... snares and ferrets will catch as much game as anyone can carry without the expense, noise.... much easier to concele... you don't walk around with snares, just hide them... imagine walking about with a rifle lol Well, you would probably know far better than me fellah,...I was just having the craic,..no offence meant.. Any well known poacher that folk knew about, would of lasted, ten fecking minutes.... And the truth of the matter is (was)....that to kill a large quantity of saleable game,..(a lurcher dog stands out like a sore thumb),..and although not quite as romantic a notion,..facts are,..the preferred choice of a full -time freelancer, would of been,..a silenced .22... Obviously he wasn't well known then.
