hopefully by next year we will of moved to a bigger place and my GF said the shed will be mine (since i took over most of the shed this time) so it will undoubtly be for ferrets and i will have more than the 2 hobs i have now.. my mate has some jills and when i get more space i can have one off him and start breeding so whilest its on my mind and i forget to ask.. what im wondering is what is a hob like with a kit? will they kill them if there not the father to the kit (like wild animals do) or are they more social. i understand you should keep the jill seperate from all the others when it

good luck mate, let us know how they get on...

mine gets any raw meat that isnt pork... most pork is fairly salted so thats the reason behind that.. 2 male hobs will go through a baby rabbit each in a day n a half now (took them about 2 n a half before)..... good thing to know about ferrets is they eat when there hungry.. they wont just wolf it down because its there.. so i try to keep some kind of food with them all the time. If im out of meat i have a bag of dry dog food thats high in protein just for a back up... or Ferret food from pets at home.. again.. as a backup.. id much rather give them what they should eat (meat) for a drink th

well just an update on my patterdale: i had the ferret on his nose today hes so well behaved i just kept making a noise that means hes doing something wrong (sucking through my teeth) whenever he got a bit excited.. the ferret seemed more bothersum than he did ha but good progress and an update on my Girlfriends Westie.... i decided to take him to the vet she gave him some shots for stomach problems.. i believed there was more than that as this morning he was sick again.. im no vet but im not stupid.. so i proded around a bit.. did a bit of research and rang the vet back telling her i

i was literally about to say .. ask around if you can tag along with someone. a mate of mine whos worked dogs and ferrets all his life knew i went shooting.. so he took me along ended up wanting some ferrets and he kept taking me and i picked everything i need to know off him.. im still learning alot though weather they are good workers or not.. all you can do is try them... put them infront of the hole and see what happens.. i got my 2 off someone on here and wasnt sure how they would work but there excellent.. they literally drag the rabbit out.. were as the mate who i went with he h

haha yea ive had to fix the hutch with the smaller ferret in twice now he rags at the mesh where his water bottle is. what about putting them together to play.. someone told me they would only fight if its in there sleeping area ... but i cant remember his exact words so it might "there both males there gonna fight" sort of thing..like i say.. totally fine out in the field

aswell as this question another has just came to mind my ferrets had there claws cut the other day and they dont just hang in your hand like my mates do.. and all others ive seen. they dont feel distressed i dont think they just climb constintly all over.. i had to actually hold the back end whilest he cut them because they wouldnt stay still.. how can i make them more placid and just hang like 90% of other ferrets?

first of all sorry if this is in the wrong section.. i dont currently work dogs (damn lack of space and money) however... I have a 3year old patterdale terrier and the rule to get him was he is a pet..now that ive moved out of my parents i got myself some ferrets. now i go shooting and he has been with me just for the excorsize.. all the basic terrier instincts are there hes had a few rabbits that have bolted from bushes and even a squirrel some how o.0.. anyways i was wondering how hard it would be to train him to work along side my ferrets. he is VERY obediant for a terrier he wo

thanks for the quick replies guys.. i might try knock up some kind of cheap "play pen" i can leave in the garden this weekend.. at least if it gets nicked or damaged it would only cost the price of the wood. thanks for the ideas about things to play with btw there both males and ive had to split them up.. there fine in the field when working they just crack on with it... but would they be ok to play together or would they just rag each other about again (one has a raggedy ear because i didnt know they would fight before)

i use either hay bought from the pet store because that has alot of the dust and seed extracted from it apparantly.. shredded paper because its free and we go through loads due to owning our own business and in the winter i throw an old top or socks in.. when its freezing ive seen my GF put in a fluffy blanket and they love that!.. but mainly hay or paper until its cold... for the flaw i use wood chips from pet shops again to minimize the dust. good idea about the lino i might get some this weekend!

wow ive not been here in a couple month my life has been hectic latley (my gf is pregnant=D) anyways... Im running out of rabbit for the ferrets and i cant go out for a shoot at the moment because ive damaged my foot and stuck with a pot.. then possibly operation which makes things a bit difficult. my mate has got birds and is gonna give me a few frozen chicks but i will only be throwing them in every couple of weeks (as to not let the feathers bother there throats etc.) what else can i use other than the high protein dog food stuff to keep them healthy.. i have been using rabbits..

ive got to do it all year round ive got 4 huge farms that i will NEVER clear the rabbits out (1 small farm with nothing on it.. think the farmer just wants company haha)... 3 of those farms im the only person allowed on them... theres alot of open ground so its not like i have trouble with over growth, however i do also shoot air rifles so i will start using the guns MORE in about a week or 2 but still takeing the ferrets out occasionally...
-
one of my farms is VERY random and the top half of it has young but the bottom half doesnt, ive been shooting there for a fair while now and ive noticed different parts of the farm is overrun by rabbits at different times of the year.... seasons are all messed up man, used to be a time when you could guarantee young rabbits at x time of the year but on said farm, in the winter theres more young at the bottom and about now there all up the top so im pretty good to go. now i need a second fair sized hutch so i can connect the 2 hutches i already have together and keep them seperated >&

will they be ok working together at least? thanks by the way!

hey guys, as some of you know i got my first ferrets on tuesday, well when i took them out i know they were fighting in the box which i figured was just 'cos they were stuck together all day (got a new lighter, box with compartments in it today).. however ive just gone into the shed to handle them and the smaller of the two has all his fur flattened as if wet around his ear and his ear looks like its been chewed a little bit.. ive split them up until this question gets answered for now as i have not yet got the two hutches conected. they are both 7 month old Hobs, there are no jills yet it

thanks, ordered it this morning hopefully wont take long to get here

haha it woudl give "lay up" a new meaning wouldnt it!
-
well after takin the ferrets out for the first time yesterday i relised they do need a little more time to get used to me, putting the collar on them was a disaster, so ive had a little time the odd parts of today to go in and let them have a good smell and climb on me, the smaller of the 2 seems to just want to cuddle or something, every time he has nuzzled into my arm or lay on his back, is this normal for a working ferret or is he too soft (lol).. the bigger one is fairly boisturus (sp?) and just wants to climb on me.. good news tho, they havnt bit me once and have actually just licked me

nice!! im slowly talking our lass into making room in the shed, at the minut i have 2 rabbit hutches connected by a toilet waist pipe, when i get my 2 other ferrets in september ish ill have to add some more on without her knowing haha
-
well i had them out (didnt see the give them another week comment), they dont seem to like the collar being put on, they riggle so much when i try put it on, i guess i just need alot of practice i only have the 1 collar at the minut so it was more of a excorcise than working, netted up with my few nets i have (getting more made), put one down the hole (after spending 5 minuts trying to get the collar on!) then let him have a mooch about. They were keen, sniffing around and they came out of every hole, but the place i went the sets are huge so i am guessing the rabbits gave just a single fe

just had a bit play with them they seem absolutly no bother, so gonna take them out in half an hour and just do some small sets for a bit, will try get some pictures and let you all know how i get on!
