  1. I am not at all surprised, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Plenty of attacks on sheep and goats are recorded but not heard of any involving horses before OTC
  2. Cubs and skinny vixens will fit through that size mesh - it will make a good frame to attach a smaller mesh to though. I have found 2" galv square weldmesh to be fine for the job OTC
  3. I see a career in short films beckoning John - for trap fetishists like myself ... OTC
  4. I have always used smoked kippers at this time of year as mink bait - fishy smell and doesn't get flyblown so readily as fresh baits OTC
  5. If you are in Canada as your flying flag on your details suggests it might be that we are talking about two different creatures here - your weasels in the USA and Canada are what we would call stoats or ermines, our weasels are significantly smaller animals. I have never caught a stoat in a see-saw trap which might be a valid point in your experimentation - it seems that our weasels are caught far more readily. OTC
  6. Yes the flat double catch trap was made by Fenn as well as the smaller single catch version. They did sell well but were outsold by the Fenn scissor mole traps which are still made today. OTC
  7. I honestly cannot say that I have ever seen such a thing as a bumble bee nest Rolfe - I thought that they were solitary creatures. Thanks for showing that OTC
  8. Fenn never made a Duffus type Rolfe, aside from the flat double loop type shown by Axholme Ferreter there, that I am still looking for myself. Springer made a Duffus type though - although this is only hearsay - I have not actually seen one You will read all about the Fenn mole trap development in my new books - when I get off my arse and get them to print!! OTC
  9. Those Canadians just have to do things bigger Chalkwarren ... I am surprised that the Ymir has not been trialled here yet (or has it?) OTC
  10. That is the type of trap that I am looking for - anyone got one of these that needs a new home I will be pleased to hear from you OTC
  11. I wish I had kept my choccy wrapers from when I was a kid Tallyho - that was a great result! OTC
  12. Jake It's a Fenn Mk I Rabbit trap - made in the 70's and 's - no longer made but still legal to use in rabbit holes only, not in tunnels If you need to know more PM me More in depth information and history available in my forthcoming books on the subject - watch this space OTC
  13. Spring traps for birds were actually banned in 1904 ... although certain loopholes in the legislation meant that killing spring traps did not come under the same restrictions. I think they were banned outright with the rest of the old steel traps that did not receive Ministry approval in 1954 Still a good few years before the Danish keepers experimented with the early Larsen traps though ... OTC
  14. well done otc.. clic on pic.. Well that is a surprise - call it an educated guess, but I have seen them nest in places like that before OTC
  15. Nice study H, he looks like a mad little fella OTC
  16. That's right Moley - the Fenn trap relied on the tightness of the hole or tunnel ( ) to ensure a clean kill. As I mentioned in my pinned tunnel trapping post the tunnel or hole needs to be just big enough for the trap to fire and no more. The encapsulation movement of the trap jaws, combine with the restricted operating area and the crush power to ensure and effective capture. Bigger holes or tunnels will allow scope for foul catches with this trap. OTC
  17. Oh sorry Rolfe - I over-read that part of your post Sounds like it could be useful stuff though, How much does it retail for, with the cable crimps? OTC
  18. Maybe that same stuff would work well for rat benders too Rolfe - might be worth a try to see how it compares to brass ... OTC
  19. I was having trouble with our dry sandy soil caving in last week, needs a bit of rain on it to make it easier and bring the moles up in the soil a bit more round here OTC
  20. Thanks Snap - I have emailed DS and he's fine and well, ranting about his shower! OTC
  21. One of my favourite little birds, Byron - nice photo Searched for nest a few weeks back from a pair on the cliffside, but to no avail ... OTC
  22. Yes, the old flat leaf spring traps employed sliding safety rings to give you some peace of mind when setting - that said, the angle of the spring often means that they slide when the trap fires so I wouldn't trust them implicity - not with those toothed jaws looming ... I no longer have the 2 traps shown here, but I thought that you might like to see something a bit different to Fenn and Kania traps OTC
  23. Here are a couple of big old traps to have a look at ... The smallest one has got 11 inch jaws OTC
