How did you get into lurchers and running dogs?
neilnbeanie replied to sussexpoacher's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
When i was a kid, about 12 i think, my next door neibour had a Whippet and a Jack Russel that he used to work. He used to let me go into his garden to shoot his air rifle, and after chatting to him i persuaded him to let me go out with him and his dogs, From the moment i saw that Whippet run, i was hooked, i never realised a dog could be so fast and graceful. It puts a smile on my face every time i see a lurcher go at full pelt, i hope i always get that . ATB. Neil. -

Hello mate, aint Greys rods guaranteed for life, i'm pretty sure all you would need would be the cost of postage, If not. I snapped a small piece of one of my rods a couple of years back, and i took it to my local tackle shop, he looked through a tin of tip rings he had until he found the right size, then all i had to do was glue it on, worked a treat, never had any problems with it since, cost me hardly anything. They grow pretty fast mate, specially if there is a lot of prey fish for them to feed on or there is lots of anglers puttting bait in.I know that the bigger fish (thirty plus) can easliy put on 10lb a year, ive seen that happen and i wouldnt mind betting they could do more, given the chance. Personally i would prebait an area with a bait that is cheap and readily available for a couple of weeks then give it a go for a few days. They are funny feeders though, you can go days without a run, then they seem to go mad and all switch on together and everyone can be catching them all round the lake.

thanks for that advise neil, ive never fished for them. the lake is 3/4 football pitch size and an island in the middle. the ONLY other fish are crussian carp. what bait SHOULD i have the best chance?? Live Crucian Carp

What i would do mate is find out exactly what other species are in the lake, then you need to decide if you dont mind catching some of these in between or not. If you only want cats, I would go for, fresh pigs liver, squid, leeches (buy online) or live or deadbait (Pike?) if allowed. If you dont mind other fish in between i would go for big lumps of luncheon meat, fishy boilies, 22mm halibut pellets (soak them in oil 1st) and bunches of lobworms. As a rule of thumb the hotter the weather, the higher up in the water they tend to feed, on really hot summer nights i have seen them crashing about

Have a look round for a second hand Fuji Finepix mate, either on e-bay or those cash converter type shops. I bought one about 6 years ago and ive never had any problems with it and it takes great pics. theres also a fair bit of zoom on them. Am thinking of upgrading mine as its only 3 million pixels, but may bite the bullet and pay more for a Canon slr.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm well chuffed with her at the moment. She spends a lot of her time chasing birds out of the garden lol, and i found a dead rat in the back garden the other morning (my garden backs on to a railway) but i dont know if it was her that killed it. Cant wait till September so i can slowly start her properly. Those are nice dogs you got there Miss Lurcher Bitch. ATB. Neil.

Hi all, Just thought i would put up a pic of my dog, she is whippetxBeddy/Greyhound. She is 7 months old and 20in tts. I will be using her for general mooching and a bit of ferreting and lamping. Ive had her from 8 weeks, training is coming on ok, the next step is retreiving with dummy wrapped in rabbit skin. She is retreiving a tennis ball at the moment. What do you think? She has chased a couple of rabbits, but i am holding her back till September. ATB. Neil.

Was thinking of going myself today but heard it was crap so i didn't bother, can anyone reccomend a good game fair in the area (south east) anyway that would be worth going to? ATB Neil.

Nice looking dog that, almost identical to mine, hows he bred mate?

Just wondering if any of you can help. About a month ago my lurcher bitch hurt her front leg while running about in the garden, she caught it on some low string that i had pegged out. She cried at the time and limped for an hour or so but then she was fine, but it seems that ever since that, after a bit of running, she will limp slightly on that leg. Its hard to get her to rest it, she is only 7 months old and does like to run mad in the garden. She has never chased anything in anger yet except a rabbit and some pigeons in my back garden and the most running she has ever done is chasing and p

Sardines have always been my favourite deadbait, but this time of year if i do go pike fishing the top water lures come out, great fun for a couple of hours after work.

Sorry to butt in but does Pat come on here, i used to do a bit of rabbiting with him when we were kids, also had a mongrel dog called Tonka. That was a long time ago. Neil.

Nice fish Was the bait fished static or was you trolling?

Thanks for the replies lads, and no im not going to push her at all, i dont really even want her chasing yet although it is nice to see her showing interest. But i was thinking if she is working cover it will be frustrating seeing rabbits bolting out and nothing to pick them up and i dont want to end up with another dog. Its just if you thought this was a bad habit for her to get into, it would be easier for me to stop it now before it really starts. As i said though im not looking for large hauls of rabbits just the odd one for the pot and any surplus for dog/ferret food so i think i will let

Hi all Just looking for some advice really, Ive got a 5 month old Whippet beddy grey that i plan to use for general mooching on rabbits, I have just started taking her out for short afternoon strolls, just to get her used to the sights, sounds and smells of the country and she has seen a couple of rabbits that have obviously bolted for cover, i also occaisionally get a rabbit in my back garden which she has chased. Now when we are out and i know there is nothing about i let her off the lead so she can stretch her legs and she has started to show an interest in entering cover. As this is m

There is a similar thread on about page 3 or 4 about this same subject, would reccomend you read this mate, i think it would help. It is titled Dogs. Seems to have helped this bloke out, i would try this if i get any problems with my pup in the future. Neil.

What about those rechargable torches that they sell in Argos, the ones with a handle. They claim to be 2 million candle power, £20. Wouldn't that be any good? Don't do lamping myself, just a thought

Is there big pike in the lake???
neilnbeanie replied to dabigmc's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Hello mate, Have read that in lakes where people kill pike, you can get an "explosion" of jacks. As these are not being taken by the big girls. Do you know for sure that there are no anglers bashing them over the head or taking the big ones away? Its just a thought and i bet this practice still goes on in some places. There are still people arond that think the only good pike is a dead pike
