Part Two Technical Wizadry And Ferreting!!!
steamingutpiles replied to seanc's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Great film and great lyrics!!!! -
I have been making the same for some time but the longnets (quickset) have been by far the most effective for the areas I hunt. I'm in the Yarra Valley about an our our of Melbourne town.
-
Through the assistance of some very helpful members of this site I have made a few quickset longnets. Here are a copuple of pics of them in action in Australia. ]

I took this with my phone sorry about the quality..

Thanks for that LC - my order is in! I will need to make a few more baskets - just ordered a production run of sheet netting to make some 200 metre (100 effectively) models. Any Aussies on here looking for a quicket net send me a message I have a few spares. As for the baskets ? Once I have a design I am totally happy with i'll make up a jig. Do you make them all from scrtach or do you have a jig?

I've started fabricating a few here for my own use based on LLC's good design. But the postage to the UK would be more expensive than the net basket. The only thing I'm having trouble sourcing is the mesh laundry bags. Does anyone havea clue where I can get them from in Australia? Cheers Army and navy stores ,Do you have something like that in Oz ?. We used to have Army Disposal stores but they have tunrned into junk shops selling cheap Chinese stuff. No nets.

ATB These aren't as good as yours but they work pretty well. I'm in the process of getting some stainless wire for my MIG so I can do a few stainless ones. Please xcuse the phot quality I did it on my phone in a dark shed

have you finished yet lol OK. OK. I bought the twine, a loomis needle and I made up a 4 1/4" template. I'll bend up a bit of wire and start...........................soon

I'll start today!

It might not be any good for night time stealthing. But, I thought it was awsome as a quickset on magnum poles, for lazy ferreting. Drops and picks up like a dream. After using one a few weeks back, Ive started making my own I liked them that much. Ive been told Nigel does a thinner spun poly for longnets? I reckon I'll have a go as well. How long do you reckon it would take to knit a 25 metre model?
-
That is me. I am only doing a single knot as that is all it takes with that twine. the net is a 100 yard rigged double stranded spun poly, with a Agouti purse net twine as a slevedge. The net set up ready to start the selvedges. One side done. Both sides done and ready to be dyed. TC Excellent work! I have a couple more questions for you. I have to cut a net which has 100 meshes drop. Is there a major issue with adding a selvedged mesh to the cut ends??? Has anyone done it? Is it worth doing????
-
Mate, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I don't propose to know it all,. thats why I ask questions to the members on here. The only netting available locally suitable for long nets is 4 oz fishing net with 3 1/2 mesh, 100 or so meshes deep. I going to adapt a couple to see how they turn out. I figure that 20 or so meshes at that size might probably to the trick. Any input will be appreciated...........
-
After reading all this good stuff on making longnets, I'm going to have a crack at making a couple of my own. I'm going to use 31/2" 12 ply netting how much drop should I use? (number of meshes). Will it matter much if both top and bottom lines are not selvedged?

Very instructive! Excellent phots.

The laws of genetics don't change, the traits sought by the breeders are the only things that change.

I think it will be the same way as the Americans do it Probably with static correction aka ( fry the buggers with a shock collar) or shoot them in the arse with rat shot Much more can be achieved with a kind word and a Dogtra 300m than a kind word alone....................................... -

Jagd Terriers on Sambar in Australia

Yeah! It's OK when they go to ground when you are hunting foxes but its a major pain in the A$$ when they go down a wombat hole for a visit during a deer hunt. Trash breaking techniques need to be employed for time to time . -

Victoria in Australia is one of the few places in the world where hunters can hunt Sambar Deer all year round. The use of hounds, versatile hunting dogs (gun dogs) and some terrier breeds including Jagds is permitted. Jagd Terriers are a very handy breed for hunting Sambar in the temperate forests of the Victorian Alps where the terrain is in hospitable and bush is thick and the going is tough. Jagd Terriers are released on fresh deer marks (sign) and hunters are stategicallyt places on game trails, river crossings etc. The flush the deer by trail barking (similar to a hound) to waiting riflem -
