    Its a matter of trust , just go about your normal business in a calculated , manner, dont make sudden movements or gestures towards the dog and if your mood is a bit off, stay away from the dog, the more nervous the dog the more they can pick up on negative vibes, When you feed it place the bowl a yard in front of you and just sit down on the ground dont call it or gesture the dog will eventually come to smell or eat the food , remain silent and still just read a book or something.     been running all my life all over the world, , theres plenty of running land here in England where they will sit tight, most of the land from Scotland to Cambridge and further south has had the bollocks kicked out of it and hares will press in even on seed never mind plough, , stubble and beet, some places up and gone but plenty stay put till you walk on them most lads out now are getting short slips, the frost and rain the hares always fancy the run thats what makes the january hares so interesting

    Talk to some of the lads with running dogs in your area see what dogs they run,It is better to talk with older lads, you will gain from their experience also.     It is all down to personal circumstances and preference as to how many dogs you keep , I have 4 on but I am retired now so time to do as I want to (just checking the wife isn't stood behind me ) the biggest problem is finding the running for them, I get out at least 3 times a week but still struggle to put runs in, I do about 3/400 miles a week, ideally 2 dogs would be enough for me now but as the ones I have now will probably be my last running dogs here, I will carry on with the 4. Injuries are part of the game but condition the dogs right and choose the type of land you run you can reduce

    if you are seriously into coursing you need at least 2 running dogs as invariably one will pick up a few niggles in the season ,also its good stockman ship when dogs reach around 3 years old bring a pup in for bringing on so 18 months down the road if a dog is pensioned off you still have the two runners.

    Most of the Drovers used to meet up at Smithfield from the sheep producing areas and no doubt sold and exchanged dogs most of the old time running lads from down south used to run black and white smooth and rough coated dogs these were always referred to as Smithfield /greys though they had whippet , bedlington and many other lines in them also the Norfolk tumblers where used as cattle droving dogs and the tumbler name allegedly derived from them tumbling of the cattle backs in the cattle pens these were running dog crosses also.

    Smithfield collies as far as I know were just welsh hill collies that were used to drive flocks of sheep on the roads starting in wales and picking up smaller flocks on the way to Smithfield Market in London in the late 1800.s the drovers used to keep a few running dogs also for the odd bit of poaching along the way as it was a long walk these running dogs and the sheep dogs were often mated and that is were the Smithfield tag came from in the late 50,s early 60.s a lot of the coursing dogs were referred to as Smithfield crosses .
