  1. nice pictures as always rich, did'nt realise you'd caught the action of that one slipping out of my hands I'll send a few to alex (land managers)
  2. last year I was given a field to ferret, by a large management company, we ferreted it quite a few times and had some good bags from it, the land managent firm got in touch with me recently and asked if I'd ferret their bosses farm, on area's that they cant shoot over, due to roads or public footpaths, so Invited richie,joe,ferreter216 and my daughter for a day ferreting, we met the farm manager early, and I was given a quick tour of the fields and affected areas, lots of good looking areas, but also lots of water filled ditches, so we ended up on a hedgerow to a field we were going to ferret
  3. well it got its first use today, took 7 ferts out, used 3 in the morning, then swapped over for some "fresh" ones in the afternoon,
  4. ferrets are addictive Ive reduced numbers big time, used to have more, but have kept what I belive to be the best of the best those who keep ferrets will know, its no harder looking after two as it is one, and therefore numbers grow, also I have 3 generations, I keep breeding registers and can therefore keep the best cariteristics in my line
  5. rabbits are very good at digging, yes it would have a meshed floor box attacthed to it, or wire basket
  6. some cracking pictures mate
  7. 5 jills 7 hobs altogether in the court, as soon as I see the first signs of a jill coming into season, then the four intact hobs get moved to a large seperate cage, leaving a castrated hob and two snipped hobs with the jills, once all jills have been taken out of season, the two snipped hobs will get caged seperatly
  8. If they have never met, put them in the carry box together on the trip to the permission, most ferts young or old like to "sniff" out other ferts, when we go out in groups, our ferts can and do, play about, but unless some serious fighting occurs, we just let them get on with it, it soon passes as they find the warrens/tunnels more intriguing, at 6 months you may find they dont take to it "like a duck to water" but give them time, sometimes they are great at it straight away, other times it'll take a few trips out, before everything comes into place
  9. luckerly, my job doing pidgeon proofing, I get to use lots of different sized sheets of mesh, one or two normally find there way home with me if your within traveling distance, your more than welcome to some
  10. I often wonder, if other ferret owners of large numbers, have the same dielema as myself on a ferreting trip, I keep 12 ferts, 5 jills/7 hobs, all quite capable of taking ferreting, but of course, am not going to lug that amount around with me, so I then tend to get favorites, ferts that have done well on the last outing, get taken on the next trip too, luckerly at a few of my permissions, Im able to drive the jeep very close to the warrens, so came up with the idea of a large transport cage, that could be left in the jeep, as although I have a few fert carrying boxes, did'nt like the ide
  11. Cant for the life of me see how that works? can you explain or put a pic up? Y.I.S Leeview streching the rabbit as in holding back legs with one hand, other hand with fingers under chin, pull and twist, rather than chinning, having said that, someone has posted a link to a u tube ferreting clip, that shows "chinning" on all the rabbits, so I'll certainly be trying this method on tomorrows ferreting trip, as others have said, it certainly looks easier/better if public present
  12. its nice to see a group working well together, after a rabbit bolts, the nearest person re nets it without hesitation
  13. works the same, weather using one, two, three, four etc once your ferts are down, you'd only need to use the locator if one in particular hadent shown itself for a while, you'll be able to track them both, if one shows at a hole, box it up, and remember to place the box at least 16ft away from your search area, otherwise you'll pick up signals from that collar , then simple find the one that hasent shown, and start digging
  14. same as magwitch has said richie, save up for another collar, anything could happen underground, your quoting wanting to use two on larger warrens, so it makes sense that they may not even meet up underground
  15. make your mind up on the amount of holes mate, yes, I saw that too, I also saw that he got a rabbit from this warren, Ive left my advice for the member, you it seems want to prove your point over mine, lets leave it at that, and agree to disagree on the best amount of ferts to use
  16. stubby

    ticks

for christ sake people, use the search facilty, as stated there are pages upon pages on tick removal, pictures of the little green tool, and good reasons not to use vaseline, if you care about your ferts, take the time to get the answers
  17. everyone to there own, but that aint inch square in the first picture
  18. make your mind up on the amount of holes mate,
  19. if you look at your jills now, hopefully both their anus and vulva will be flat to the skin, when the jills come into season, the vulva starts increasing in size, although you may get other signs (mine start getting nippy) the swollen vulva is easy to spot, make sure that a snipped hobs is kept seperately for a good couple of months after the operation, as although snipped, he wont be firing blanks straight away, so if, put straight back with jills, could potentianly father a litter of kitts
  20. all ferreters will have different views, but to many new ferreters, start panicking after 5 minutes and pull out locators, rather than starting another disscussion on this and hijacking this post, I'll leave it at that, everyone to their own
  21. never you may not want to dig that ground because of the ground conditions, rubble, flint, etc, but a locator will always locate, unless the fert has gone out of the range, 16ft depending on locator
  22. I have never heard so much rubbish in all my life!!!! I have done one 30 odd hole warren on two seperate occations this year working it with a single ferret. First time I had 9 out of it the second time I had 7 with a single jill. and not a single layup on either occasion. Yes there might have been rabbits left after each visit, but again, there might not have been. Too many ferrets in a small area cause layups...........But there again you dont need fieldcraft to use a spade. using a single ferret while ferreting is asking alot, yes, you may have had rabbits using a single ferret, I
  23. pack up ferreting until you can afford a locator I wont even get into the arguments of muzzles down for 30 minutes , thats a normal amount of time, it sounds like you need the re-training and all these rabbits he's killing underground, that you cant have, so he's coming to the surface covered in blood is he, or is he chinning them instead
  24. expecting a single ferret to bolt rabbits, is asking alot, you said you heard thumping, but no rabbits appeared, so they were down there, they wont bolt into the open and more danger unless they really need to, also having fur brought to the surface aint a definate kill underground, you'd expect to see blood
