  1. Wounds need stapling as soon as possible after they have happened; that will need a lot of staples and very thorough cleansing with something like Hibiscrub before the wound is closed. Don't forget to leave an inch gap at the bottom for it to train: and the chances are the dog may well need antibiotics too. Unless your mate is well experienced at this sort of thing then it is a job for the vet.
  2. I sincerely hope your'e going to get that treated properly: a wound that size needs stapling or stitching or it'll be an age for it to heal. Doesn't look very clean in the 2nd pic either, and that daggy bit of dead skin to the right on the pic should be professionally removed as it is dead and will only slow down the healing process. Don't forget that she wouldn't be able to get at the wound to lick it herself and keep it clean either. If all this has already been done then I apologise for jumping the gun, but if that is the case where's the pic of the treated wound?
  3. I just googled this.................and was horrified to say the least, though it just shows that there are no risk free drugs for man or beast! http://www.srdogs.com/Pages/rimadylfr.html
  4. Burrell seems to think that if he adds a bit of this and a dash of that then all the fractional amounts of all these additions will blend together to make a super dog, with only the good points of each breed coming out and none of that negative qualities. And he reckons his family has been breeding lurchers for 400 years, or is it 200? LOL If he hasn't got it right by now then he's doing something wrong!
  5. I reckon that rabbits: ruby red hares: orangy yellow fox: yellowy munty: brilliant silver white, like burning magnesium! Sheep's eyes are like that too!
  6. I bought my Goretex over trousers from this guy: very helpful, and they were only about £20, very good if your'e on a budget. His email is: sales@Camo4U.co.uk or if your'e feeling flush then visit the John Norris site undefinedhttp://www.johnnorris.co.uk/system/shopassistant.htm loads of stuff: leggings, over trousers etc. Not all at mad prices either. You can give them a bell and order by phone too and they're very helpful.
  7. It's idiots like that who give dog men a bad name: not that the sh*thead who did that could in any way be called a dog man. :realmad: and as for making a vid of it: words fail me! Poor little Border.
  8. [quote A lot of the time, I wish we could break the dogs to them to be honest but they are better than a blank at the end of the day. A bit like me with the rats I guess: better than nothing when there's no foxes around.
  9. I don't work my terriers with ferrets either, and I'm sure they would kill one if they found one when they're out hunting, but at home in the yard I know that they wouldn't kill one if it got out; they see them at ground level every day and are broken to them as tiny pups. I once had a hard as nails Lakie which I took round the farms when I did full time pest control. One day a farmer's wife came out to tell me she had a rat in her kitchen under the sink. I went home, fetched a ferret and put the ferret into the cupboard: the rat was behind the back boards of the units: rat bolted with fe
  10. Great post and pics: I know I'll sound like an idiot, but those possums look so inoffensive and fluffy! I guess the antis over here think the same about foxes! LOL
  11. There are some 1/4 Kerry 3/4 Greyhounds about: looking very similar to the black dog in that pic: they are by the original first cross in Ireland, which was a tank of a dog. I believe it killed the bloke's Deer/Grey! So I was told.
  12. It is far far better to get a veterinary pain killer for dogs: not worth risking their lives by using human medecine. Whilst some medecines such as antibiotics cross the species barrier, pain killers are not one of them. If you have a decent relationship with your vet who understands working dogs you should be able to get Rimadyl which is an anti inflammatory/pain killer, but like all these drugs it should not be used long term. Even Metacam can cause liver function problems if used long term, though Metacam is commonly prescribed for long term use for conditions such as arthritis in dogs.
  13. Well that is fascinating: I know absolutely nothing about wombats but have just learned a little. Tried to Google womabts and there seems to be hardly anything on them. Any of you Oz guys know a site with pics of the wombat and its bony plate? Just very curious as to how they evolved: mention on one site of a dinosaur with similar bony plate. Have any of you actually come into contact with them, are you speaking from bitter experience re wombats squashing dogs? Sounds totally plausible if outlandish as a method of defence.
  14. I suppose you who think that its just par for the course for your terrier to kill your ferrets wouldn't mind if they (the terriers) killed someone else's pet either? Just because a terrier kills a ferret doesn't make it hard or brave or clever, though by the sounds of it you think it does: saddos the both of you who haven't bothered to break your dogs to the very animals you keep alongside them.
  15. Handle with great care: can go off bang!
  16. It's expensive stuff but very good quality. I bought the Ptarmigan coat a few years back when I was fortunate enough to have a bit of spare dosh, though to be honest for general terrier/lurcher work I'd reccoment Cammo over anything: virtually indestructable. Also dear, but lasts a lifetime.
  17. I've got the Ladies Burley Fleece: its for sale on the net for £95: warm as toast: I actually got mine for half price as they'd made a mistake in the catalogue! That was 2 years ago and they were supposed to be £150 then! http://www.bestinthecountry.co.uk/acatalog...hoffel_101.html
  18. Nice one HofW. Still haven't taken mine out yet, though I will do soon: just need to find some rabbits that are far enough from a hedge! How big is Drift now? Looks like she's filled out a bit. Morgan is about 25 1/2" and 32 kilos!! But very agile with it: the other lurchers get out of her way when she's pratting about, though to be honest I've seen her jump over other dogs and flick sideways to avoid an impact when they're playing: never run into one yet.
  19. Found this on Ozzie doggers and the person who'd posted it found it on another forum: thought it was worth a read. The following is not my own opinion, but i read it on another forum...was written by someone who races sled dogs; and being working/performance dogs thought it might be applicable...and an interesting read, so here goes: I will try to make this post as comprehendible as possible but no promises…it’s been one of “those†days, if you know what I mean LOL Also before I begin I would just like to make it clear that this post is not intended to try to advocate keeping a
  20. Sorry, not in a good mood tonight! But to me that is just another man made monstrosity, like Pugs, Chihuahuas etc. And downright cruel to breed animals that have problems breathing and keeping themselves clean.
  21. Not wishing to sound critical here: but why the hell don't people break their dogs to ferrets if they keep both? And don't give me a load of baloney about working terriers being killers that kill everything> I bought in a 9 month old tough nut, mostly JRT with a dash of Lakie. Hard guy LOL. I'd broke him to my cat in minutes, though luckily he'd never seen one before, though the ferrets took a little longer. He'd sit and watch them intently without moving with that look in his eye. I wouldn't say that I'd like to take him ferreting, but he knows they're my animals and forbidden, the
  22. dont believe my only options are to smack him or lock him up! Do I take it that your garden is unfenced? Cos if mine were and I let my terriers out for a leak last thing at night they'd be sure to want to go off hunting. Yes, the older ones would stay with me if I told them, but at 11 months old (think teenager) all they want to do is GO! Just like kids: get out from under that parental (or in this case: your..) control. Wouldn't removing the initial temptation to go off be a far better thing to do in the first place? Or if you can't fence in all the garden at least make a pen i
  23. As has often been said: common sense aint that common! When I look at some of the posts on here I am heartened with how much common sense prevails within the hunting community, and then I read others which remind me that the saying is true!
  24. Get some Animalintex poultice from a horse tack shop: cut the size you need to well cover the wound or whatever, soak in very hot water, squeeze out excess water, wrap round dog's foot, though make sure the poultice isn't too hot for comfort: allow to cool a bit if necessary. Bandage round with Vetwrap and leave for 4 hours or so. Not as long as it says on the packet as horse's have thicker skin than dogs. This is totally brilliant stuff and draws out infection, foreign bodies and the like. If there is an infected cut between the pads cut a small piece of the poultice off first and wedge i
