  1. A good longnet, draw a map of the field, put a true north arrow on the map, and wait till the wind is up, a good dark night, check the map to see if the wind is blowing towards the hedge where you intend to set the net, reky spot first, you say theres alot of brambles, make sure your net wont come into contact with the edge of em,you could get some hazle sticks and make up,a couple of quick set nets, if you are under confident setting in the dark, practise is the name of the game with longnets and the dark . good luck darren
  2. Hi I never thought to ask on here, but has anyone made there own dehydrator,I love jerky and bought one last yr, it turned out great used it twice spot on, then it gave up the supplier was contacted,it was replaced that gave up cheap chinese crap so I wondered, if any one had made one themselves. And if it was easy to do,if so how they went about it, I am starting to hit the roe does hard, and wanted to make best use of the meat but I am not going to spend another £60 on crap, can anyone advise please ATB Darren
  3. Over here I think the smelliest thing to gut is. The brown hare which stink but are good eating
  4. I sometimes find that with private land owners they would rather have someone they can trust, rather than money which ties them into a contract. Also someone who will deal with anything else they need, ie rabbits/foxes and carion. You hear all the stories of muntjack down south being vermin - a deer I would dearly love to stalk - but find it hard to locate land or scyndicate down there.I am in the new forrest in two weeks and will be looking for contacts but I feel it will be out of my price range, something tells me the further south you go the more expensive it would be. I dont know for sure
  5. Dont worry about the cooking, each to his own,get em pissed and gutted quickly especially in hot weather, and there's plenty of good rabbiters out your neck of the woods to show you the ropes, find the local game keeper he may help if you ask,I will go now before I talk shite again, atb darren
  6. Hes right generally the shoot captain can see at a glance that the gun is open, hence safe side by sides were the traditional but even the modern hammerless ones, were looked at cautiously after hammer guns, over and unders same thing, but can easily be seen as open from distance by the captain, however semi autos you cant and you are never sure when looking from the side, only the gun handler knows for sure if its loaded or not, thing is the shoot captain is the guy who spends a lot of his time monitoring safety, and he has the task of speaking to people should they be any concerns, and that can
  7. where in west cumbria are you??????????? general area
  8. Watch when you cook em if you leave the meat on the bone that can taint them. I always par the meat off them now, If I do that the kids love it, try a curry just replace the chicken with rabbit, beautiful, really is
  9. Totally agree with this, get the guts out stop the bellies going green.and allow them to cool properly.we used to use salt water for the blood around the wound area, other than that pick the rabbit up leave the guts where it was laid,or throw them in the edge, once done very easy and quick to do,done in seconds I like to keep em separate from other game.but thats just me,ATB Darren
  10. Agree fully with your point of view ,I think both of us have done some muttering about it in the past , but realise that theres no going back . and it will come police will not grant a F.C for deer unless you are on the ladder. and something else in the future will come into play mark my words all stalkers will need to have access to a trained deer dog with the correct training certificates before you may be engaged in a lease with the forest companies along with first aid certificate or ATV handling ce rtificate or at least a designated person on the lease will need to be qualified ,there wil
  11. Well Said, unfortunatly the masses have set the president and the police, and everyone is leaning towards these qualifications. I somtimes wonder if it's a product of people trying to avert the blame - should anything go wrong - and maybe some one misinterpreted some euro guidline, don't know. I hate the politics of things they frustrate me, you can tell when somones with you in moments what expierience they have. Through the small things they do or not in some cases.I had a accident when a horse stamped on my head a month before my last stalk was due to finish my DMQ 2, and I didnt know I coul
  12. I am sorry about my preavious, post I do see the need for standards within the deer stalking arena,of the sport and in fairness I did not take time to read the starting post properly, just a bad day really, and people like you STU are the salt of the eath in my book, for spending your time to help others within the sport,I myself take kids out ferreting duck shooting, and a fair few new starts into the sport, see I believe pasionately that they are the future of it,and the one thing that will help stop the idiots banning it,over the last few days I have had two different people out stalking with
  13. What shit is this , something else to make money I have my DSC 1 but not two, I know people who have DSC2 who in my opinion do not have depth of knowledge, just paid there money and done it , but can't stalk for shit some of them, all the gear no idea, it's a money making scheme, there are a lot of true country men stalkers out there who get overlooked or discriminated against because they never did DSC 1or 2, I find it shameful that these very experienced people are ignored because they didn't take an imposed qualification, the lead ban for wildfowl was imposed that was crap two, imposed mi
  14. This topic is a big one, down to personal preference, most people who have a quickset own a traditional net, truth is these nets have been around for a long time in one form or another, preset was what the old man used to use in awkward places, it was a traditional net set then tied up, bottom line to top with a slip type knot, when pulled sharply from one end, the bottom line fell free from the top, dad used to use it on less favourable nights, he would set the net then tie it up two days before setting it, and leave it in place rabbits would run under net onto field, then the old man would
  15. Hows the dog bred,?? I have noticed my dog is becoming very possesive of the bag,in the past when training gun dogs, I would give the dog back every thing he brought to me with praise, and made a game out of the transaction, my little lurcher loves to give me sticks and even shot crows and things, but rabbits he holds onto a bit and I dont know if thats a maturity thing,
  16. No bother mate I see the resemblance, will try that forum cheers,
  17. Cheers andy thought as much the will be left with me for a bit af training for three wk or so,he is a real belting dog training wise the lad has spent the time with him, and I am going to work on confidence with him,but think its a waiting game, the dog I know for sure now is three in march, confident in alot of stuff, and i did believe he was picking uncertainty up from the handler, two yr ago he was jumping and catching the ejected cartidges from a gun,He certainly is not gun shy I have seen that in alot of other dogs and cured it in a few,gun nervous fits the bill with out a doubt he is differ
  18. Yes but have you seen the price of them smokers, there not cheap better to make your own perhaps,
  19. Very strong dog, have you any idea what the racing whippets name was. My late father used to race non peds, was it non ped?. Your dog should make a good lamp and ferreting dog and should be able to take a knock or two, very nice indeed. He was bred out west cumbria as far as I know its sire was a pedigree 20 inch racing wippet but cant be sure mate,I got him cos backs screwed and needed a good hand to attend the nets for me,
  20. Good coats on them good for winter ferreting
  21. He has a lot of pace he can be explosive the shock is he comes back and he's not knackered, I think his only main problem is inexperience he hasn't grasped when to use his acceleration so he overshoots, sometimes or he will go out slow rabbit gets up he sets off and overtakes the rabbit his pace really is good he just needs to adjust it at the right time and that as far as I can tell this is down to inexperience at 91/2 month I am really not worried, he hasn't run loads openly, he is getting the hang of ferreting though, which is why I got him,
  22. This is a 20 inch racing wippet x with a greyhound austrailin cattle dog mix lurcher my first lurcher for 30yr,he is a very capable little dog 9 1/2 month old 22 inch to the shoulder now taking rabbits to ferrets and nets / longnets, retreives crows, swims, he has had only a few open runs on rabbits with lamp and hasnt shamed himself,I am falling in love with these breeds, they are not what you think, this dog joins in with the spaniel lab and pointer,he is starting to work alongside them in a team manner, I dont believe these dogs are just rabbit and rat dogs,I am going to experiment with this d
  23. Its facinating to think that a whole industry of supply and demand, grew around the rat pits of old and controlling rats was a way of life for people back then, what happened,we still have a need to control rats probably as much as ever, people even made there own baits, and traps of all discriptions,a multitude of different dog breeds were crossed for speed and agility,It was massive and a crying shame most of this is now lost,I might try and find a few old books and read up on some of the old methods, its as diverse a subject as poaching itself,
  24. Dad used to have bean tins, sown in the opening of the stocking, and force the end into the hole, he said you could hear them entering the stocking, with black stockings they wouldnt bite cos it was dark, him and grandad washed their hands in meths or parrafin before hand, they had some big days on them back then, they kept two sets of ferrets the smaller more agrresive /fast ones for rats, the medium sized for rabbits, and really large ferrets for under sheds/buildings or klinker sets on rabbits or rats,he used to speak fondly of them days,he always had a good terrier, people like that are missin
